Air Astana (IATA: KC, ICAO: KZR) is the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, headquartered in Almaty with hubs at Almaty International Airport (ALA) and Astana International Airport (NQZ). It suits travellers flying around Kazakhstan, across Central Asia and the Caucasus, and between Kazakhstan and Europe, the Middle East, India and East Asia.
Air Astana was founded in 2001 as a joint venture between Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna, with 51%, and the British company BAE Systems, with 49%. The first flight ran in May 2002. BAE Systems has since sold its whole stake, and in February 2024 the airline listed its shares on the London Stock Exchange, the Astana International Exchange and the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange.
The group runs more than 105 routes to 19 countries. Domestic flights link Almaty and Astana with regional cities across Kazakhstan. Regional routes reach Tashkent, Bishkek, Baku and Tbilisi, and longer flights go to Delhi, Seoul, Beijing, Bangkok and Phuket, plus several European capitals. Flights to Russia have been suspended since March 2022. Almaty handles most international departures, and Astana works as the second hub, with many domestic connections between the two.
FlyArystan is the group's low-cost airline and Kazakhstan's first. It started in 2019 inside Air Astana and gained its own air operator certificate in 2024, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary. FlyArystan fares include fewer services, so check which airline name appears on your ticket.
Business class and economy are sold across the fleet, with lie-flat business seats on the A321LR and 767. Skytrax has named Air Astana the best airline in Central Asia and the CIS every year from 2022 to 2026.
If your trip combines an Almaty to Astana domestic flight with an international flight on separate tickets, allow for passport control and bag recheck.
