Family afternoon
Picnic under the shelters while children use the play areas and paddle in the shallows.
Al Farkiya Beach is a free, landscaped family beach on Al Khor Town Road, about an hour north of Doha, with gardens, play areas and shaded seats facing the mangroves. It opens at 7:00 and stays open until midnight most days, closing at 22:00 on Wednesdays and Sundays. Families with young children and picnic groups usually stay two to four hours.
Al Farkiya Beach (also spelled Al Farka or Al Farkiah) is a free, landscaped public beach on Al Khor Town Road, just outside Al Khor on Qatar's north-east coast, about an hour's drive north of Doha. It suits families with young children, picnic groups and anyone combining a swim with a day in Al Khor.
The seafront runs for about 1,350 metres and faces shallow water across to the mangroves of the Al Khor coast. Al Khor grew as a fishing and pearling town, and its harbour is still lined with fishing boats. The coast around it holds Qatar's densest mangrove stands, which continue north towards Al Thakhira.
Al Farkiya is a municipal family beach with a garden, children's play areas, wooden shade shelters, watchtowers, restrooms and parking near the entrance. The water is calm and shallow, which is why families pick it for small children. There is no café on the sand, so bring your own food and drinks.
Families come for long picnics under the shelters while children move between the play areas and the shallows. In the warmer months the beach fills after sunset, when the evening breeze arrives. There are no lifeguards unless signs say so, so keep children within reach in the water. Barbecues are only allowed in permitted areas, glass is not welcome and you take your rubbish home or use the bins.
Al Khor Towers, Purple Island and the Al Khor Corniche are each about 3 kilometres away, Al Khor Park about 5 kilometres, and the Al Thakhira mangroves about 8 kilometres. A full day can start with kayaking through the mangrove channels at Purple Island in the morning, lunch in town and a late swim at Al Farkiya. Photography is welcome, but respect other families' privacy; flying a drone needs approval from Qatar's civil aviation authority.
