Lusail Stadium, about 20 km north of central Doha, is Qatar's largest stadium with 88,966 seats, designed by Foster and Partners and inaugurated in September 2022, three months before it hosted the World Cup final between Argentina and France. Getting inside needs an event ticket. Thirty minutes to an hour suits a look from outside, longer if you attend a match or concert.
Lusail Stadium stands in the planned city of Lusail, about 20 kilometres north of central Doha. It was built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was officially inaugurated on 9 September 2022 with the Lusail Super Cup match. With 88,966 seats, it is the largest stadium in Qatar.
The stadium was designed by Foster and Partners with the stadium specialists Populous. Its golden bowl shape and patterned facade draw on the decorative bowls and vessels of the Arab and Islamic world and the play of light through the traditional fanar lantern. It belongs to the Qatar Football Association.
Lusail hosted ten matches at the 2022 World Cup, including the final on 18 December 2022, when Argentina and France drew 3 to 3 after extra time and Argentina won 4 to 2 on penalties. The match is remembered as one of the most dramatic finals in the history of the tournament, with Lionel Messi lifting the trophy on the stadium's stage.
The stadium uses a solar powered cooling system to keep the pitch and stands at a comfortable temperature, and its roof shades the seating bowl. After the tournament the plan was to reduce the capacity to around 40,000 seats and convert other areas into community space with shops, cafes, sports and education facilities and a health clinic, although that work had not been carried out by the end of 2025.
Visitors can see the stadium from the outside at any time, and it continues to host football matches and major events. Lusail QNB station on the Doha Metro Red Line is the closest stop. Tickets are needed only for events, and match tickets are sold through the organiser of each event.
Lusail Stadium has stayed Qatar's main venue for finals since the World Cup. It hosted the opening match and the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final and the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup final, where Morocco beat Jordan 3 to 2 after extra time in front of 84,517 people.
The stadium was built by a joint venture of HBK Contracting and China Railway Construction Corporation. Work began on 11 April 2017, the building was handed over on 21 November 2021, and its first event, the Lusail Super Cup on 9 September 2022, drew 77,575 fans to see Al Hilal beat Zamalek on penalties.
Its record attendance of 88,966 was reached three times during the 2022 World Cup, at Argentina against Mexico, Argentina against Croatia and the final. In the 2023 Asian Cup, the host nation opened with a 3 to 0 win over Lebanon before 82,490 people and won the final 3 to 1 against Jordan before 86,492. Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3 to 0 in the 2024 Intercontinental Cup final there. A Finalissima between Spain and Argentina planned for 27 March 2026 was cancelled by UEFA over safety concerns, so check the current events calendar before planning a trip around a match.
