Learn to kitesurf
Steady winds and shallow water make Fuwairit Qatar's kitesurfing centre; lessons run at the kite resort.
Fuwairit Beach is a white-sand bay on Qatar's north-east coast, about 90 km north of Doha, with sandspits, rock formations and one of the country's main turtle nesting areas. The public beach is free and open around the clock, and kitesurfers favour it in steady wind. Follow conservation signs during nesting season. Plan on half a day.
Fuwairit Beach is a white-sand bay with sandspits, mangroves and rock formations at Fuwairit village on Qatar's north-east coast, about 91 km north of Doha. The public beach is free and known for kitesurfing and turtle nesting, and a half day suits kiters, families and anyone curious about the Al Thani family's early history.
Fuwairit, also spelled Fuwayrit, lies in Al Shamal Municipality. Cliffs border a fine sandy bay with unusual rock formations, and the coast has sandspits and significant mangrove communities. Archaeological evidence suggests people lived here from as early as the 16th century, and the Al Musallam rulers used it as their main residence in the 17th and 18th centuries.
According to family tradition, the Al Thani moved to Fuwairit from Zubarah in the late 1700s, and Mohammed bin Thani, later recognised as Qatar's first ruler, was born here before the family moved to Al Bidda, now Doha, in the mid-19th century. In 1847 a decisive battle near the village killed Isa bin Tarif and about 80 of his men. The old town was abandoned by the mid-20th century, and the newer settlement of Safya has grown nearby. The village mosque dates from the 1920s and was rebuilt in the 1960s with traditional materials.
Fuwairit and Ras Laffan together hold about 30 percent of Qatar's sea turtle nests, and the nesting beach closes to visitors during the breeding season. A 2013 survey recorded more than 53 bird species off the coast. Jebel Fuwairit, a rocky ridge, carries more than 100 rock carvings, including cup marks and boat-like shapes.
The steady wind and shallow water have made the bay a centre for kiteboarding, and in 2022 Hilton opened a 50-room kite beach resort here.
Public parts of the beach are free; bring water and shade if you are not staying at the resort, and follow all signs from conservation patrols. Autumn and winter bring cooler weather and good wind, and they avoid the turtle season in late spring and early summer, when sections of the coast are closed. The drive from Doha takes about an hour and a quarter.
The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes north on Al Shamal Road, following signs to Fuwairit, and there is no public transport. The public beach has few facilities; the kite resort's restaurants and rentals are for its guests. Al Maroona Beach is 4 km away, Al Ghariyah 6 km and the Al Jassasiya rock carvings 10 km, and the Fuwairit Heritage Mosque stands in the village. October to March is the best season.
Visit Qatar names Fuwairit as one of Qatar's main nesting beaches for the endangered hawksbill turtle. Females come ashore between April and July, when parts of the beach are restricted or closed, and visitors can sometimes watch nesting or hatching in managed settings. Outside the season the calm, shallow water suits swimming and shell collecting, and the rocky section at one end draws photographers. Plan around five hours, and bring food, water and shade, since restrooms and shops may not be available.
