In short

South Beach's stone crab house since 1913, near South Pointe Park and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Stone crab claws are the order for families and couples, with a bar, outdoor seating and takeaway.

Joe's Stone Crab is a seafood restaurant at 11 Washington Avenue at the southern tip of South Beach, Miami Beach, a few blocks from South Pointe Park. Joe Weiss opened a lunch counter here in 1913, and it is now one of Miami's oldest and busiest restaurants, listed in the Michelin Guide. It suits families, couples and anyone who wants Florida stone crab in season.

Stone crab claws and key lime pie

Stone crab claws: boiled, chilled, cracked and served with the house mustard sauce. They are priced by size and are the most expensive item on the menu. Key lime pie is the dessert to finish with. Florida stone crab season starts on 15 October, and Joe's marks each new season with its reopening.

Joe Weiss and the 1913 lunch stand

Joe Weiss moved from New York to Miami Beach in 1913, reportedly on his doctors' advice for asthma, and started a lunch stand at Smith's bathing casino. In 1918 he and his wife Jennie bought a bungalow on Biscayne Street and set tables on the porch; Jennie ran the room and Joe cooked. The stone crab came in 1921, when a Harvard ichthyologist working at James Allison's aquarium brought some to Joe, who boiled them. Their son Jesse made the restaurant famous with celebrities from the 1940s to the 1960s. Jesse's daughter Jo Ann opened Joe's Take Away in 1987 and created the Key lime pie and the creamed garlic spinach. Her son Stephen Sawitz leads the restaurant today as the fourth generation.

The old-school dining room and terrace

The dining room is large and old school, with a bar and a terrace for warm evenings.
