In short

A haute Creole restaurant in New Orleans' Garden District, on its site since 1893 and run by the Brennan family since 1974. It is a fine-dining meal of the city's own cooking.

Commander's Palace is a haute Creole restaurant at 1403 Washington Avenue, at Coliseum Street in the Garden District of New Orleans. Emile Commander opened a saloon on the site in 1893, and the Brennan family took over in 1974. Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan are the co-proprietors today, and Meg Bickford is executive chef, following Emeril Lagasse, Jamie Shannon and Tory McPhail. It suits travellers who want a dressed-up New Orleans meal, especially the weekend jazz brunch. The French Quarter is about 15 minutes by car, and the St. Charles Avenue streetcar runs nearby.

Jazz brunch, lunch and 25 cent martinis

The jazz brunch, with a live jazz trio, is the most famous, so book it well ahead. Lunch is the most affordable way to eat here, and the 25 cent martinis at those lunches are real. Turtle soup and gumbo are long-standing starters, and the bread pudding soufflé with whiskey sauce is the classic finish. Plan on more than two hours.

James Beard awards and the Wine Spectator award

Commander's has won seven James Beard Foundation awards, including Most Outstanding Restaurant in 1996,, and holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award. Service is formal but warm, and the room adapts to the occasion, from business lunch to family celebration.

Local sourcing and the chef's table

The kitchen aims to source about 90% of its ingredients from within 100 miles, which explains how much of the menu changes with the Louisiana seasons. Commander's also offered one of the first chef's tables in the country. Next door, Le Petit Bleu is the family's café and shop for crêpes and cookbooks. Lafayette Cemetery and the Garden District mansions are close by for a walk after the meal.
