Al Rekayat Fort is a small restored stone fort in north-west Qatar, about 8 km from the Al Zubarah UNESCO site, built around the mid-18th century to guard a freshwater well. Qatar Museums lists entry as free but marked it temporarily closed in late 2026. When open it keeps 9:00 to 17:00, Saturday to Thursday, and 12:30 to 17:00 on Fridays. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Al Rekayat Fort (also written Ar Rakiyat) is a small stone desert fort in north-west Qatar, about 8 kilometres north-west of the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah site, built to guard a freshwater well. Qatar Museums manages it and lists entry as free, though the site was marked temporarily closed in late 2026. It suits history-minded travellers on a day trip to the north.
Qatar Museums says the construction date has not been confirmed. Archaeological evidence points to the mid-18th century, when Al Zubarah was thriving as a pearling and trading town, while other accounts place its origins anywhere from the 17th to the 19th century. Lorimer's Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf recorded it as a ruined fort in 1908.
The name means wells in Arabic, and the fort is thought to have been built to protect a water source. In a dry landscape with few reliable wells, control of water meant control of the surrounding land and grazing. The well inside its walls supplied the nearby village with fresh water into the 20th century, and the fort sheltered residents in times of conflict. A small stone mosque stands nearby.
The plan is a rectangle around a large open courtyard, with narrow rooms on three sides and a single entrance in the south wall. Three corner towers are rectangular and the fourth is round, which makes the fort easy to recognise from a distance. The walls are local stone with lime plaster, and the roofs follow traditional Qatari construction.
The fort has been conserved twice. A partial conservation took place in 1988, and a major campaign ran from October 2020 to September 2021. That work kept the original plaster wherever possible, replaced damaged sections with plaster made from the same historical materials and rebuilt the roof in the local style.
The fort gave its name to the village of Ar Rakiyat, on the flat northern interior plain near the north-west coast. Lorimer's Gazetteer placed it about 5 miles (8 kilometres) north-west of Zubarah. Several other abandoned settlements lie in the same area, including Al Khuwayr, Al 'Arish, Freiha and Ain Mohammed.

General
Qatar Museums says the date is not confirmed. Archaeological evidence suggests the mid 18th century, when Al Zubarah was flourishing. Some summaries describe it as a 19th century fort.
Its name refers to wells. Specialists believe it was built to protect water resources, and its well supplied the nearby village with fresh water into the 20th century. It also sheltered residents during conflicts.
It has three rectangular corner towers and one cylindrical tower around a large courtyard. Narrow rooms line three sides, and the only entrance is in the south wall. It was conserved in 1988 and again in 2021.
Only by car, as no public transport runs out here. The final stretch is an unpaved track where a 4x4 makes life easier. Al Zubarah Archaeological Site lies about 8 km to the south-east, so both fit into one trip from Doha.
