Qatar Museums asks visitors to get in touch before visiting Freiha; ask about access when booking Al Zubarah.
Freiha is an abandoned fortified fishing and pearling village on Qatar's northwest coast, about 3 km north of Al Zubarah and probably older than its famous neighbour. No ticket is sold, and Qatar Museums asks visitors to contact them before going, so the site suits archaeology enthusiasts who plan ahead. An hour walking the foundations is usually plenty.
Freiha is a deserted fortified pearling and trading town on Qatar's north-west coast in Al Shamal Municipality, about 3 km north of Al Zubarah, spread over some 50 hectares along a shallow bay. It is open ground with no facilities, Qatar Museums asks visitors to contact it first, and most people see it together with Al Zubarah.
Freiha lies in Al Shamal Municipality, spread over about 50 hectares and roughly 700 metres along a shallow bay. Its name comes from the Arabic faraihah, meaning joy. According to historical accounts, clans of the Bani Utbah confederation migrating from Najd founded it in the late 17th century.
The village probably reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1783 local tribes, including the Al Maadeed of Freiha, helped drive back a Persian assault. By 1904 about 150 people lived here, mostly fishermen, and in 1937 the forces of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani occupied it. It was later abandoned.
The most prominent building is Qal'at Freiha, a fortified structure with corner towers in an Islamic style, storerooms and date presses for making date syrup, excavated and conserved in 2005. The second-largest building is the mosque, with a mihrab, minbar, washing well and courtyard, a plan that resembles later Qatari mosques.
Stone fishing weights, fish bones and tidal fish traps along the shore show that the sea fed the village. Nearby rock outcrops carry carvings: Geoffrey Bibby and Peter Glob recorded several hundred cup marks in 1956, and Hans Kapel catalogued 303 carvings in 1983. Since 2009 a project run with the University of Copenhagen has surveyed and excavated houses, the mosque and rubbish heaps.
Qatar Museums lists Freiha among the heritage sites that require contacting it before a visit, and no hours or fees are published. The site is open ground with no shade or services. It is best combined with Al Zubarah, which is open with a ticket and has restrooms and parking at its fort.
The drive from Doha takes about 1 hour 20 minutes via Al Shamal Road and the Al Zubarah road, then north along the coast. There is no public transport, and the nearest restrooms are at the Al Zubarah Service Centre. The ground is unpaved and uneven, and walking on walls, removing finds or driving onto the site is not allowed. Come between November and March, ideally early in the day.

General
Freiha lies on the northwest coast of Qatar in Al Shamal Municipality, about 3 km north of Al Zubarah town. The site spreads about 700 metres along a shallow bay and about 200 metres inland.
Its origins are not precisely known. Excavations and historical documents suggest it reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries, and that it is probably older than Al Zubarah. People still lived there in the early 20th century.
It is a fortified building with corner towers in an Islamic style. Inside were storerooms and date presses used to make date syrup. The building was excavated and conserved in 2005 by Qatari archaeologists.
Qatari archaeologists worked there in 2005. From 2009 the Qatar Islamic Archaeology and Heritage Project, run with the University of Copenhagen, mapped the town and excavated the mosque, houses and middens.
It comes from the Arabic faraihah, meaning joy.
Cup marks on nearby outcrops. Geoffrey Bibby and Peter Glob recorded several hundred in 1956, and Hans Kapel catalogued 303 carvings in 1983.
Mostly fishermen. About 150 people lived there by 1904, and stone fishing weights, fish bones and tidal fish traps show how much the village depended on the sea.
