What to expect

Azul Brazilian Airlines (Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras) is a Brazilian airline headquartered in Barueri, near São Paulo, with hubs at Campinas Viracopos, Belo Horizonte Confins and Recife. It suits travellers who need to reach smaller Brazilian cities as well as the big ones, and those flying from Brazil to Florida and Portugal. David Neeleman, who also founded JetBlue, set it up on 5 May 2008, and it started flying on 15 December 2008.

Three hubs and a long domestic list

Azul served about 150 destinations in November 2025, counting the small-town routes of its regional arm Azul Conecta. Viracopos in Campinas is the biggest hub and the launch point for most international flights. Confins serves Minas Gerais and central Brazil, and Recife connects the north-east. Cuiabá and Curitiba are focus cities.

Many Azul routes reach cities no other Brazilian airline serves, which is the main reason to choose it. Outside Brazil the network covers South America, US cities including Florida, and Europe, including Portugal and France.

Getting to Viracopos

Viracopos is in Campinas, a long drive from central São Paulo, so the hub is not a good choice for a trip that ends in the city. Plan the road transfer before you book. If your trip starts or ends in São Paulo itself, compare the total journey time with flights via Congonhas or Guarulhos.

Codeshares with United, JetBlue and others

Azul is not part of a global alliance. It has codeshares with United, American Airlines, JetBlue, TAP Air Portugal, Emirates and Air Canada, among others, and interline agreements with Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Etihad and Copa. These agreements let you book a long-haul flight on a partner and connect to Azul's domestic network on one ticket.

Baggage rules on low domestic fares

Baggage allowance depends on the fare family and route, and domestic fares at the lowest level are the strictest. Check your allowance in your booking on voeazul.com.br. Online check-in and mobile boarding passes are available in the Azul app.

Cabin classes

Business

and Economy

Long-haul A330 flights offer Business, Economy Xtra and Economy; domestic flights are economy with extra-legroom rows. Azul sells Economy with an extra-legroom section on its jets, and Business on the long-haul A330s. The turboprops are the smallest aircraft and have the least overhead space, so a slim cabin bag helps on regional routes.

Good to know

Azul runs connecting buses from some cities to its airports. Its loyalty programme is Azul Fidelidade (called TudoAzul until April 2024), and its official website is voeazul.com.br.

No global alliance

Azul is not in Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam, so status from an alliance airline does not carry over to its flights.

Cabin bag only

Azul sets one allowance for short-haul and another for long-haul, and its premium cabins always carry more than the cheapest economy fare. Check the route-by-route figures on voeazul.com.br.

Pro tip: weigh your bags at home before leaving for the airport; extra weight on Azul usually costs more at the counter than when you add it online.
