What to expect
GOL Linhas Aéreas (IATA G3) is a Brazilian airline headquartered in Rio de Janeiro and one of the country's two largest domestic carriers. From hubs at São Paulo Guarulhos and Congonhas, Rio de Janeiro Galeão and Brasília it flies to about 79 destinations in Brazil, South America, the Caribbean and the United States. Part of Abra Group with Avianca, it suits travellers looking for low fares around Brazil.
A bus family takes to the air
GOL was set up in 2000 by the Constantino family, and its first flight went from Brasília to São Paulo on 15 January 2001. It started as a low-cost carrier and grew fast. Shares listed in São Paulo and, from 2004, in New York.
In 2007 GOL bought the Varig brand for about US$320 million, and the two businesses merged in 2009. It agreed to buy the low-cost airline Webjet in 2011; Webjet stopped flying in November 2012. Smiles, GOL's loyalty programme since 2006, was spun off and listed in 2013.
The Abra Group merger with Avianca
In 2022 GOL and Avianca announced they would combine under a new holding company, Abra Group. On 1 April 2026 its operating company absorbed the listed holding company. Celso Ferrer has been chief executive since July 2022.
Network and market share
The hubs are Brasília, Rio de Janeiro Galeão, São Paulo Congonhas and São Paulo Guarulhos, with focus cities including Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont and Salvador. In 2019 GOL had about 37.7 per cent of Brazil's domestic market by passenger-kilometres. International flights reach Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and other South American countries, the Caribbean, Mexico and Miami and Orlando in the United States.
GOL codeshares with Air France, KLM, American Airlines, Avianca, Copa and Turkish Airlines, among others. It carried about 30.8 million passengers in 2023. It is not part of a global alliance.
