⚠ Read this before you plan a Bandarban trip

Nafakhum is still off-limits to tourists. The administrative travel ban imposed in late 2022 has not been lifted as of this update. Tourists are only permitted to travel as far as Tindu. A tourist went missing at Nafakhum in November 2025 after entering the area without registering or hiring a guide, despite the active ban.

Tindu, Boga Lake, Debotakhum, and Keokradong reopened in 2025 after security operations eased, but all require a registered local guide and check-post registration. None of this is optional, and ignoring it is the actual cause of most serious incidents in the area, not the terrain itself.

Most "best camping sites in Bangladesh" lists treat every site on the map as equally available. They aren't. Some of the country's best-known camping spots sit inside an active travel restriction zone that changes by the month depending on security conditions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and getting this wrong has put tourists in real danger, not just an inconvenient detour.

This guide covers all 25 sites worth knowing about, grouped by the kind of camping trip they actually suit (coastal islands, hill-tract trekking, forest and lake parks, organized basecamps), with the current access status checked against official district notices and recent news rather than copied from older articles. If a site requires a permit or sits in a restricted zone, that's stated upfront in the entry itself, not buried at the bottom of the page.

How this was checked: access and permit status for Bandarban hill-tract sites was verified against district administration notices and news coverage current as of June 2026. Restrictions in this region change with security conditions, sometimes within months, so treat any "open" status here as accurate as of this update and confirm again closer to your travel date, ideally with a registered local guide or the Bandarban district tourism office.

Current Access Status, at a Glance:The Bandarban hill-tract sites where restrictions actually matter

Coastal and forest-park camping sites on this list don't carry travel restrictions. The hill-tract sites around Bandarban do, and the status of each one has changed more than once in the past three years as security conditions shifted. Here's where things stood as of this update.

Site Status Requirement
Tindu Open, permit required Registered guide + checkpoint registration
Boga Lake Open, permit required Registered guide + checkpoint registration
Debotakhum Open, permit required Local guide recommended, check current rules
Keokradong Open, permit required Reopened Oct 2025, follow security guidance on arrival
Nafakhum Banned, do not enter Active administrative ban; access point only as far as Tindu
Mirinja Valley Generally open Resort-based, less affected by hill-tract restrictions
All other sites on this list No restrictions Standard local rules only
This table reflects information current as of June 2026. Bandarban restrictions have shifted multiple times since 2022 in response to security operations in the region. Confirm current status with a registered guide, your accommodation, or the district tourism office before finalizing hill-tract plans, especially for any site beyond Tindu.

🏕️ How to Choose the Right Camping Site:

Selecting the right camping site is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your trip. A well-chosen location ensures comfort, safety, and an overall better experience, while a poor choice can quickly turn a good plan into a frustrating one.

Here’s how to choose your campsite the right way:

🛡️ Prioritize Safety: Always start with safety. Avoid areas close to riverbanks, unstable slopes, or under large, weak trees. In Bangladesh, most camping risks come from weather conditions and terrain, so choose a location that feels secure and stable.

🌦️ Check Weather Conditions: Weather plays a major role in camping comfort. The dry season (November to April) is ideal, while the monsoon season can bring unpredictable rain and flooding. Always check the forecast before heading out.

⛰️ Evaluate the Ground: Look for flat, dry, and slightly elevated ground. Avoid uneven, rocky, or muddy surfaces, as they can affect both your sleep and tent stability.

💧 Consider Water Access: It’s practical to camp near a water source, but maintain a safe distance. Being too close can lead to increased humidity, insects, and potential flooding risks.

🌬️ Account for Wind Exposure: Open areas such as beaches or hilltops can be exposed to strong winds. Choose a spot with natural protection like trees or small elevations to create a more stable setup.

🚶 Assess Accessibility: Make sure the site is reasonably accessible, especially if you’re carrying equipment. Remote locations are appealing, but they require proper planning and experience.

👥 Balance Privacy and Security: While secluded spots offer a better experience, complete isolation may not always be ideal. For most travelers, a quiet but known location provides the best balance.

📶 Check Connectivity & Emergency Access: Ensure there is at least basic mobile network coverage and that you are aware of the nearest settlement or help point. This is important for safety and emergency situations.

🎯 Align with Your Purpose: Choose your campsite based on your goal—whether it’s relaxation, adventure, or photography. The right location depends on the type of experience you’re looking for.

Camping Tips and Hacks that Actually Work:Ten habits that separate a smooth trip from a rough one

Bangladesh's terrain shifts fast between coastal sand, hill-tract forest, and lakeside ground, often within the same trip. The ten habits below come up again and again among people who camp here regularly, and most of them cost nothing beyond a few minutes of planning before you leave home.

🛡️

Plan your route and share it before you leave

The Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Sundarbans carry real risk from terrain and limited accessibility, not just from wildlife. Tell someone outside your group exactly where you're headed and when you expect to be back.

  • Share your route with someone you trust before departure
  • Check current local conditions and restrictions for your specific site
  • Note known environmental risks for the area
  • Save emergency contact numbers offline on your phone
🌦️

Check the weather 24-48 hours out, not the morning you leave

Sylhet's weather turns fast, and sudden rain has wrecked more trips than any wildlife encounter on this list. Build the forecast check into your packing routine, not as an afterthought.

  • Check forecasts 24-48 hours before departure
  • Skip the trip if a storm alert is active for your destination
  • Stick to the dry season, November through April, for the most reliable conditions
🔋

Bring a power bank, not a backup plan

Most camping sites in Bangladesh have no electricity. A high-capacity power bank or solar charger keeps your phone, GPS, and camera running without rationing battery life. This matters most for navigation and for reaching help if something goes wrong, both of which depend on a charged phone.

🔥

Start the fire before the humidity does

Humid air makes campfires genuinely harder to start here than in drier climates. Dry leaves, paper, and small twigs work as reliable fire starters once everything else is damp.

  • Gather dry material before sunset, while it's still easy to find
  • Keep the fire contained and follow local rules where they exist
  • Never leave a fire unattended
🍳

Cook less at the campsite, prep more before

Cooking from scratch at a remote site eats up time you'd rather spend outdoors. Rice dishes, pasta, and dry food that need minimal preparation cut that time down without cutting the meal quality.

  • Prepare simple, low-effort meals before you leave
  • Store food in reusable containers, not single-use packaging
  • Pack the minimum cooking equipment the meal actually needs
🛏️

Sleep quality decides how the next day goes

A bad night's sleep on hard ground ruins the morning that follows it. A foam mat or inflatable mattress, paired with a sleeping bag suited to the season, solves most of this on its own.

  • Use a foam mat or inflatable mattress under your sleeping bag
  • Match the sleeping bag's warmth rating to the season you're camping in
  • Avoid setting up directly on hard or uneven ground
🎒

Organize gear by category before you pack it

Digging through one large bag for a flashlight at night wastes time you don't have to spare. Mesh or compartmentalized bags, sorted by category, fix this before it becomes a problem.

  • Use mesh or compartmentalized bags instead of one large duffel
  • Separate food, clothing, and tools into their own sections
  • Keep frequently used items in the most accessible spot, not buried at the bottom
🦟

Treat insects as a planning item, not an afterthought

Forest regions like the Sundarbans bring real insect pressure, especially after dusk. A combination of repellent, candles, and the right clothing covers most of it.

  • Use a natural or standard insect repellent, applied before sunset
  • Bring citronella candles for the campsite itself
  • Wear clothing that covers skin during peak insect hours
🎯

Pack gear that does two jobs, not one

Every multi-purpose item you bring is one less item taking up space and weight. A tarp works as both shelter and ground cover. A sleeping bag doubles as a blanket. A single multi-tool replaces half a dozen separate tools.

🧰

Carry an emergency kit even on a short trip

The trips that need an emergency kit are rarely the ones where you expected to need it. Keep one packed and ready rather than assembling it each time.

  • Basic first-aid supplies
  • A multi-tool or knife
  • A flashlight or headlamp
  • Any medications you take regularly
⛰️

Read the ground before you pitch the tent

Terrain near rivers and hills in Bangladesh can change fast, sometimes within hours of rainfall upstream. Five minutes spent scanning the site before setup catches most of the problems that would otherwise show up at 2 AM.

  • Choose ground that's flat, dry, and slightly elevated
  • Stay out of flood-prone areas and away from unstable slopes
  • Avoid spots directly under dead branches or loose rock

Permits and Safety in the Hill Tracts:What's actually required, and why ignoring it has caused real harm

The Bandarban hill tracts (Ruma, Thanchi, Rowangchhari, Alikadam) operate under a different set of rules than the rest of Bangladesh's camping sites, tied to ongoing security conditions in the region rather than general tourism management. A travel ban first imposed in October 2022 in response to militant activity has been lifted in stages, site by site, through 2025, and the conditions attached to each reopening are not optional.

The three standing conditions for approved Bandarban zones: tourists may only visit officially approved locations based on the current security situation, travel must be arranged through a registered district or upazila-level tourist guide, and all visitors must register their details at designated checkpoints or tourist information centres before entering.

The November 2025 incident at Nafakhum illustrates exactly why these rules exist in practice, not just on paper. A 17-member group entered a banned area without registering or hiring a guide. The area has no mobile network coverage, so when a member went missing while swimming, the rest of the group couldn't call for help and had to physically travel back out to file a report. Foreign nationals face an additional layer: a special permit, typically arranged through a travel agency in Dhaka, Chittagong, or Bandarban town, on top of the standard guide and registration requirements that apply to everyone.
