The flagship of the century-old Chengdu restaurant credited with inventing mapo tofu, on Qinghua Road and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. The original dish at a low price, with real Sichuan heat.
Chen Mapo Tofu (Qinghua Road) is the flagship of the century-old Chengdu restaurant credited with creating mapo tofu, at 10 Qinghua Road in Qingyang District. The dish is named after its originator, Lady Chen. It suits travellers who want the original version of Sichuan's best known dish at a low price, and who can handle real heat. The branch is in the west of the city, convenient to combine with Du Fu Thatched Cottage or the Qingyang Palace area.
Mapo tofu in a stone pot
It arrives in a stone pot with steamed rice: silky tofu, ground beef and a sauce of chilli, fermented bean paste and numbing Sichuan pepper. The tingle builds as you eat. More luxurious versions add long snout catfish or abalone, and lotus-leaf-wrapped steamed pork is the other dish worth ordering.
The kitchen cooks for local palates. Order a mild vegetable dish and plenty of rice to balance the spice, and ask staff to lower the chilli level if you are sensitive to heat.
Bib Gourmand and a family-friendly room
The Michelin Guide Chengdu awards it a Bib Gourmand and places it in its lowest price band. The dining room is modern and comfortable, suited to families and groups.
