In short

Guangzhou's classic yum cha teahouse since 1880, on Dishifu Road in old Liwan. Travellers come for traditional dim sum and tea in a historic room.

Tao Tao Ju (Dishifu Road) is the flagship of Guangzhou's historic Tao Tao Ju teahouse, on the ground floor of 20 Dishifu Road in Liwan, the city's old western quarter. It dates from 1880 and remains one of Guangzhou's classic places for yum cha, the Cantonese ritual of tea and dim sum. It suits travellers who want traditional dim sum in an old-Guangzhou setting near the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street. Huangsha station on Metro Lines 1 and 6 is close by; use Exit B.

Push carts and tea service at the Dishifu Road original

The Dishifu Road original still uses push carts. Servers wheel bamboo steamers between the tables, and you pick what you want as they pass. A dedicated tea server looks after each table, so choose your tea first, then order in rounds to keep the dumplings hot.

Reviewers in 2024 praised the steamed beef balls with dried tangerine peel, beef rice rolls and char siu bao with abalone sauce, along with har gow with whole prawns and siu mai topped with caviar. Larger Cantonese dishes such as roast goose are served after 11:00. Dim sum items were about CNY 30 to 36 each in 2024, a little more than nearby rivals.

The kitchen turns out close to 100 kinds of dim sum a day. Beyond dim sum, the house dishes include salt-baked chicken, West Lake chrysanthemum fish and an award-winning crisp roast suckling pig.

The 1880 founding in a scholar's academy

Tao Tao Ju was founded in 1880 in a former Xiguan scholar's academy and became a teahouse popular with writers and poets; its signboard calligraphy is credited to the Qing scholar Kang Youwei. It closed in 1927 and reopened as a restaurant in 1933. The renovated interior keeps an old Guangzhou feel.

Arriving early to avoid weekend waits

Arrive by about 08:30 on weekdays or 08:00 at weekends to avoid a long wait, because local families and domestic tourists fill the room on weekend mornings.
