It opened to visitors on 28 February 1989. The collection began with 22 animals of five species, on land first allocated at 4.9 acres and later expanded.
By 2018 the collection had grown to about 300 animals of 54 species.
Mammals include Bengal tigers, lions, Asian black bears, zebras, spotted and sambar deer, hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, fishing cats and slow lorises.
