The world's best party cities are the places where nightlife shapes the whole trip: Ibiza for superclubs, Berlin for techno that runs from Saturday night into Monday, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans for carnival in the streets, Las Vegas for pool parties and festival weekends. Each city peaks at a different time of year, so timing your visit to the right season or event matters as much as picking the city.
This guide covers nine cities known for their party scene, with the season or event worth timing a trip around, how the scene works, what a night out involves and the local rules visitors trip over. If your idea of nightlife leans towards Asia, our guides to Bali's best nightclubs and Pattaya nightlife cover those scenes in depth.
How we chose these cities: We picked cities where nightlife draws international visitors in its own right, with an identifiable scene (techno, superclubs, carnival, river clubs) and at least one major annual event. Event dates were checked against organiser announcements in October 2026; club line-ups and opening dates change every season, so confirm them before booking.
The nine cities span four continents. Ibiza's season runs April to October, and carnival month is February.
Party cities compared: scene, peak season and big event
The world's party cities peak at different times: Rio Carnival and New Orleans Mardi Gras in February, Ultra in Miami in March, EDC Las Vegas in May, and Ibiza, Barcelona and Belgrade in the European summer, while Berlin's clubs run year round. Use this table to match a city to your dates; most cities stay open outside peak season too.
Some of these peaks collide, which matters if you hope to combine two cities in one trip. In 2027 Rio Carnival and New Orleans Mardi Gras share the same week, both building to Tuesday 9 February, so choose one. Ultra in Miami (26 to 28 March 2027) comes about seven weeks later and fits a separate spring trip, while EDC Las Vegas in May and the European summer season of Ibiza, Barcelona and Belgrade can be linked by flights across the Atlantic. Berlin is the easy fallback because its clubs run year round.
| # | City | Scene | Peak time | Big event |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ibiza, Spain | Superclubs, sunset bars | April to October | Opening and closing parties |
| 2 | Berlin, Germany | Techno, weekend-long clubs | All year | Weekend marathons |
| 3 | Amsterdam, Netherlands | House, techno, canal-side bars | April and October | King's Day, ADE |
| 4 | Barcelona, Spain | Beach clubs, late dinners, festivals | June to September | Sónar |
| 5 | Belgrade, Serbia | Floating river clubs (splavovi) | May to September | Summer river season |
| 6 | Las Vegas, USA | Casino clubs, pool parties | March to October | EDC Las Vegas |
| 7 | Miami, USA | Latin, EDM, beach parties | November to April | Ultra, Miami Music Week |
| 8 | New Orleans, USA | Live jazz, brass bands, street parades | January to March | Mardi Gras |
| 9 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | Samba, street blocos | February | Rio Carnival |
The best party cities in the world: full guide
Ibiza, Spain
The superclub capital of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is the island that turned the superclub into a holiday in its own right. The season runs from late April to mid-October and opens with a weekend of opening parties around the International Music Summit, when the big venues (Pacha, Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa, Amnesia) launch their summer residencies. The closing parties in late September and October are the other high point, and they sell out fast.
A typical night starts late. Sunset crowds gather on the west coast around Sant Antoni, dinner runs to 11 p.m., and the clubs do not fill until after 1 a.m. Ushuaïa is an open-air daytime venue that ends earlier; the indoor clubs run to dawn. Playa d'en Bossa is the base for club-goers, Ibiza Town for a mix of nightlife and the old walled quarter, Dalt Vila.
Ibiza is expensive in July and August. Entry to the big clubs, drinks inside and taxis add up fast, and rooms near the clubs book out months ahead. May, June and late September give the same clubs at lower prices.
- Base: Playa d'en Bossa, Ibiza Town or Sant Antoni
- Best time: Late April to mid-October
- Entry: Buy club tickets online; door prices are higher
- Getting there: Ibiza Airport (IBZ), with summer flights from across Europe
Electronic music fans come for exactly this. Book opening or closing weekend tickets the day they go on sale.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin, the techno capital, keeps its underground clubs busy all year. The scene grew out of empty buildings after the Wall fell in 1989, and it still feels different from anywhere else. Many clubs open on Saturday night and keep going through Sunday, so arriving at noon on Sunday is normal. Berghain, in a former power plant in Friedrichshain, is the best known, with a famously unpredictable door and no published dress code.
Clubs in Berlin protect privacy: at Berghain and many others, door staff cover phone cameras with stickers and photos are not allowed inside. Respect it; taking pictures is a quick way to be asked to leave. Expect to queue, sometimes for hours, and to be turned away without explanation.
Beyond the famous names, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain are full of smaller venues, open-air spaces in summer and bars along the Spree. Berlin is also cheaper for a night out than London or Paris, and public transport runs all night at weekends.
- Base: Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg
- Best time: All year; summer adds open-air venues
- Dress: Dark, simple, no-fuss; no published code
- Getting around: U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night at weekends
Techno lovers who want long sets are in the right city. Arrive on Sunday afternoon when queues are often shorter.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
With the best festival calendar on this list, Amsterdam mixes canals with house and techno. Its two biggest party dates bookend the year. King's Day on 27 April turns the whole city orange, with street parties, boat parties on the canals and a citywide flea market. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) in October is a five-day conference and festival with hundreds of events in clubs across the city; in 2026 it ran from 21 to 25 October.
Outside those dates, the scene centres on club venues in Amsterdam-Noord, reached across the IJ by free ferry, and the bar streets around Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. The city is compact, and cycling or the night bus gets you home.
Amsterdam has tightened rules in the old centre to reduce nuisance from party tourism, especially in and around the Red Light District. Expect enforcement, and keep noise down in residential streets.
- Base: De Pijp, Oud-West or near Centraal
- Best time: King's Day (27 April) or ADE (October)
- Booking: Rooms for King's Day and ADE go months ahead
- Getting around: Bike, tram, and free ferries to Noord
Time a visit around the festivals. Wear orange on King's Day and keep your phone in a zipped pocket in the crowds.
Barcelona, Spain
On the Mediterranean, Barcelona combines beach and city, with late nights that mix food and nightlife better than any other European city. Dinner rarely starts before 9 p.m., bars fill around midnight, and the waterfront clubs near Port Olímpic stay busy until dawn in summer. The Gothic Quarter and El Born have cocktail bars in old stone buildings; Gràcia has neighbourhood squares that stay lively on warm nights.
The big date is Sónar, the electronic music and digital creativity festival in June. In 2026 it ran 18 to 20 June, held for the first time at a single venue, Fira Gran Via. Mid-August brings the Festa Major de Gràcia, when residents decorate their streets and host free outdoor concerts.
Pickpocketing is common on La Rambla, the metro and the beaches. Carry only what you need and keep your phone off the table on terraces.
- Base: El Born, Gràcia or Poblenou
- Best time: June to September
- Big event: Sónar in June
- Getting around: Metro runs all night on Saturdays
It suits anyone after beaches by day and clubs by night. Book Sónar tickets early for the best price tier.
Belgrade, Serbia
In the Balkans, Belgrade is Europe's best-value party city, with river clubs that make its scene unlike any other: the splavovi, floating clubs, bars and restaurants moored on the Sava and Danube. In summer, the river clubs are where the night happens, with turbo-folk, house and pop playing until morning.
City rules limit floating venues to set stretches, mainly the Sava quay in New Belgrade and the Danube in Zemun, so that is where to head. In winter, the action moves indoors to clubs and bars in Savamala, Dorćol and the city centre, and the kafanas (traditional taverns) on Skadarlija keep live music going late.
Prices for drinks and entry are well below Western Europe, and taxis are cheap if you use a booked or app-based service; avoid hailing on the street. Many splavovi expect table bookings for groups, so reserve ahead on weekend nights.
- Base: Dorćol or Savamala
- Best time: May to September for river clubs
- Booking: Reserve tables at popular splavovi
- Getting around: Use app or booked taxis
Budget-conscious groups get the most for their money here. Go to the river clubs after midnight; earlier they are restaurants.
Las Vegas, USA
For the biggest spectacle, go to Nevada. Las Vegas packs casino nightclubs, dayclubs built around hotel pools, residencies by big-name DJs and shows into a single four-mile boulevard, the Strip. The pool party season runs roughly from March to October, when afternoons on a day bed are as much part of the night as the clubs.
The headline event is Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For 2027 the organisers announced two weekends for the first time: 14 to 16 May and 21 to 23 May. Hotel rates jump on those dates.
Vegas costs can surprise visitors: resort fees added to room rates, cover charges that rise as the night goes on, and table minimums at clubs. Downtown Las Vegas around Fremont Street is cheaper and has its own bar scene.
- Base: Centre Strip or Downtown
- Best time: March to October for pool parties
- Big event: EDC Las Vegas, May
- Getting there: Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
Groups who want everything in one place will find it here. Check resort fees before comparing hotel prices.
Miami, USA
Miami Beach and downtown Miami give North America a winter-sun party destination in Florida. South Beach has the art deco hotels and Ocean Drive bars, while downtown and the Wynwood arts district have the larger clubs and late-night venues. Latin music, reggaeton and house all have strong scenes.
The key week is in late March, when Miami Music Week fills the city with parties and the Ultra Music Festival takes over Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. Ultra 2027 is scheduled for 26 to 28 March.
Spring break crowds and police measures in Miami Beach in March can mean curfews or restrictions in parts of South Beach, so check local announcements if your trip falls then. Summer is hot, humid and in hurricane season.
- Base: South Beach or Brickell
- Best time: November to April
- Big event: Ultra and Miami Music Week, March
- Getting there: Miami International Airport (MIA)
Come for winter sun with nightlife. Book Music Week hotels well before tickets for Ultra go on general sale.
New Orleans, USA
Louisiana's biggest city has the best live music on this list, and New Orleans parties in the street, to a brass band. Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is the loud, neon end of it; Frenchmen Street in the Marigny is where to hear live jazz and blues in small clubs, often with no cover or a small one. Second-line parades, led by brass bands and social clubs, can appear on Sunday afternoons in many neighbourhoods.
Mardi Gras is the high point. Carnival season starts on 6 January and builds to Fat Tuesday, which in 2027 falls on 9 February. The biggest parades run along St Charles Avenue in the final two weeks. Rooms book out months ahead and prices peak.
New Orleans allows drinks on the street in the French Quarter, but only in plastic "go cups": glass and cans are banned on the street. Leave your car at the hotel; parade route closures make driving pointless.
- Base: French Quarter, Marigny or the Garden District
- Best time: January to March; Jazz Fest in spring
- Rule: Street drinks in plastic go cups only
- Getting there: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)
Live music fans should start on Frenchmen Street. For Mardi Gras, stand on St Charles Avenue for a family-friendly view of the parades.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Brazil's Rio Carnival, the biggest street party on this list, is the world's best-known party: samba school parades in the Sambadrome and hundreds of free street parties, called blocos, in every neighbourhood. In 2027 Carnival falls from Friday 5 February to Ash Wednesday, 10 February, with the top-tier samba school parades on the main nights and a Champions Parade the following Saturday.
Sambadrome tickets range from grandstand seats to boxes, and buying through official channels or reputable agencies avoids fake tickets. The blocos are free; check the schedule the week before and go early, because the popular ones draw huge crowds.
Outside Carnival, Lapa is the nightlife district, with samba clubs and street bars under the arches of the old aqueduct. Take only what you need on the street, carry a copy of your passport, and use app taxis at night.
- Base: Copacabana, Ipanema or Botafogo
- Best time: Carnival in February; Lapa all year
- Big event: Sambadrome parades
- Getting there: Rio Galeão International Airport (GIG)
This is the once-in-a-lifetime carnival trip. Book rooms early, since Carnival rates and minimum-night stays apply.
How to choose a party city for your trip
The calendar comes first. A city at its peak gives a completely different trip from the same city in the off season: Ibiza in February is a quiet island, and Rio outside Carnival is a beach city with good bars. If your dates are fixed, pick the city that is in season. If your dates are flexible, pick the scene you want and plan around its big weekend.
Next, set a budget honestly. Ibiza in August and Las Vegas on an EDC weekend are among the most expensive nights out in the world. Belgrade, Berlin and the New Orleans music clubs give big nights for far less. Group size matters too: table bookings in Vegas and Belgrade make sense for six people and little sense for two.
Finally, think about what kind of night you enjoy. Superclubs and big festivals suit people who want famous DJs and production. Berlin suits people who want long, deep sets. Rio and New Orleans suit people who want to party outdoors with the whole city. Compare flights to two or three of the cities on your dates before deciding; fares around carnival and festival weekends move fast.
Tips for a safe night out in party cities
- Buy tickets from official sellers. Festival and club tickets sold on social media are a common scam. Buy direct from the venue or event, and expect personal, name-linked tickets at the big ones.
- Protect your phone. Pickpocketing in dense crowds is the most common problem in every city here. Use a zipped front pocket or a crossbody bag, and turn on device tracking before you go out.
- Plan the ride home. Know the night transport options or use an app or licensed taxi. Avoid unlicensed cabs outside clubs, especially in Rio and Belgrade.
- Pace yourself in the heat. Ibiza, Las Vegas, Miami and Rio are hot. Drink water between drinks and eat before you go out; long nights start late.
- Carry ID. Clubs check age and ID at the door. Carry a copy of your passport, or the original where venues ask for it, and keep the original locked away otherwise.
- Book rooms first. On big event weekends, accommodation sells out before tickets. Secure a refundable hotel first, then buy the event ticket.
