In short

The first Dishoom, a Bombay-style café on Upper St Martin's Lane, serving from breakfast to late evening. The bacon naan roll and house black daal are the most-ordered dishes, and families, groups and theatregoers all fit in, with a bar and outside seating.

Dishoom Covent Garden is the first branch of the Dishoom group, a Bombay-style café at 12 Upper St Martin's Lane in London's West End that opened around 2010. It suits anyone after Indian café food from breakfast to late evening, including families, groups and theatregoers. Leicester Square and Covent Garden underground stations are steps away.

The bacon naan roll and other dishes to order

At breakfast, the bacon naan roll is the dish Dishoom is known for. Akuri, Parsi-style spiced scrambled eggs, and The Big Bombay are the other breakfast regulars. Later in the day, the house black daal, slow cooked and rich, is the most ordered vegetarian dish, with pau bhaji, gunpowder potatoes and the paneer roomali roll alongside. Chicken Britannia biryani, murgh malai, spicy lamb chops and kejriwal (fried eggs on chilli cheese toast) round out a typical order.

The Irani café look and the bar

The menu pays tribute to the Irani cafés of old Bombay. A 2020 refurbishment reworked the interior around Bombay's early talkie cinemas, with art deco details and large chandeliers. Downstairs, the Permit Room bar serves cocktails, and there is outdoor seating. The Good Food Guide lists the branch in a moderate price band for central London.

The 1949 Bombay setting and special menus

The design is set in 1949 Bombay during the early talkies era, with photographs, portraits and film posters from 1930s to 1960s Bombay cinema on the walls and an indoor-outdoor verandah. The Covent Garden special is Prawn Pathia: grilled prawns in a sweet and tangy tomato masala with onion salad and roomali roti. The cocktail to match is the Diamond Thriller, with vodka, Cointreau, cranberry and a chilli and lime shrub. Separate vegan and gluten-free menus are available, and Dishoom lists the café as halal-friendly. For bookings and questions, call 020 7420 9320.
