In short

A Glasgow institution on cobbled Ashton Lane in the West End since 1971, serving Scottish produce in a long-established room, with bars for a dram. Hillhead subway is close by. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Ubiquitous Chip is a Scottish restaurant and bar complex at 12 Ashton Lane in Glasgow's West End, opened by Ronnie Clydesdale in January 1971. It suits visitors who want Scottish produce in a long-established room, or just a dram in one of its bars. Ashton Lane is a cobbled lane of bars and restaurants off Byres Road. Hillhead subway station is about two minutes away, and the University of Glasgow and Kelvingrove Park are close.

The restaurant, brasserie and bars inside

The Chip is several venues under one roof. The main Restaurant serves the full menu. The Mezzanine and the Upstairs Brasserie offer a more relaxed menu. For drinks there is the Wee Whisky Bar, which claims more whiskies per square foot than any other bar in Scotland, the Corner Bar for cocktails and wine by the glass above Ashton Lane, an Art Deco Upstairs Bar, the Big Pub and a covered rooftop terrace. The Brasserie's menu is built around small and big plates for sharing. A dram in the Wee Whisky Bar or a lighter meal in the Brasserie works well if a full dinner is more than you need.

Venison haggis and Scottish produce

The kitchen has championed Scottish produce for decades, and venison haggis is the house classic. Recent menus have included Shetland cod with an oyster emulsion and squid ink crackers, venison with beetroot, and cranachan, the Scottish dessert of cream, raspberries, oats and whisky. A 2025 review put two courses in the Restaurant at about £45.

The Metropolitan Pub Company bought the Chip in 2022 and restored the building, keeping its character while updating the menus.

Private events, seasonal menus and gift cards

The Chip also hosts weddings, private dinners and functions, runs seasonal set menus such as an autumn and a festive menu, and sells gift cards.
