What to expect

EgyptAir is the state-owned flag carrier of Egypt, headquartered in the EgyptAir Administrative Complex at Cairo International Airport, its main hub. It suits travellers flying to and from Egypt and those connecting in Cairo between Africa, Europe, the Gulf, Asia and North America. Founded on 7 June 1932 as the Misr Airlines division of Misr Airwork, it started flying in July 1933, which makes it one of the oldest airlines in Africa and the Middle East.

Cairo hub and network

In June 2026 EgyptAir served 84 international and nine domestic destinations in 56 countries. All operations moved to Terminal 3 at Cairo International in April 2009. Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh are focus cities.

The network covers the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia, and long-haul flights reach North America. In 2026 EgyptAir added Cairo to Los Angeles and Cairo to Chicago O'Hare. If you transfer in Cairo, check Egypt's visa and transit rules before booking.

Joining Star Alliance in 2008

EgyptAir joined Star Alliance in July 2008 as its 21st member, and it is the alliance's only member based in the Middle East and North Africa. Codeshare partners include Lufthansa, United, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada, so a single ticket can combine EgyptAir with partner flights beyond its own network.

The EgyptAir group

EgyptAir Holding Company includes several airlines. EgyptAir Express, launched in June 2007, flies regional and domestic routes. EgyptAir Cargo was set up in 2002. The group owns Air Sinai outright and holds 60 percent of Air Cairo and 13.33 percent of Smart Aviation Company.

Baggage and connection times in Cairo

Baggage allowance depends on the route and fare, so confirm yours on the EgyptAir website before you pack. Leave enough time between flights in Cairo, especially if a second flight is on a separate ticket.

Baggage allowance

On EgyptAir, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your MS e-ticket.

Cabin bag only

A long-haul EgyptAir trip and a short hop can come with different allowances, and every cabin above the lowest economy fare gets more. The baggage page on egyptair.com shows the rule for your route.

Pro tip: if your MS fare comes without a hold bag, buy one in your booking before you fly; airport prices for extra bags are usually higher.

Online Check-in

The four steps below take you from your EgyptAir booking to the gate, whether you depart from CAI or another airport on its network.

  1. Step 1

    Check in online

Online check-in for MS flights is on the official EgyptAir website. You need the MS booking reference or e-ticket number and the passenger’s surname.

    Booking ref + surname
  2. Step 2

    Prepare your documents

Before leaving for the airport, check that your passport is valid and that you hold any visa or entry document needed at the other end of your EgyptAir flight. Domestic MS passengers should bring a photo ID the airline accepts.

    Passport · visa · ID
  3. Step 3

    Arrive early

Each airport has its own EgyptAir check-in and bag-drop deadline, listed in your booking. Allow extra time for busy terminals and international MS departures.

    Check your deadline
  4. Step 4

    Drop your bags

At the airport, take your bags to the EgyptAir bag-drop point. Collect a printed MS boarding pass there if you have not saved one to your phone.

Cheap tickets

Ways to pay less for an EgyptAir ticket, from the dates you choose to the fare type you buy.

  1. 01

Be flexible with your EgyptAir dates

EgyptAir fares are often lower on midweek departures. Search a spread of dates around your trip to find the cheaper days.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Avoid peak holiday dates

Fares rise around Eid, the Hajj and Umrah seasons and European holidays to the Red Sea. Book early for those dates.

    School holidays · festivals
  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

An EgyptAir fare that includes a checked bag, seat choice or cheaper changes can cost less overall than adding those extras later.

    Baggage & changes
  4. 04

    Don’t leave busy routes late

Last-minute MS seats on popular routes tend to cost more. Book a few weeks out when an EgyptAir route is busy.
