KIX is long but logical. This guide covers both terminals, the train and bus choices into Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, and where to rest if you land late or leave early.
Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.
Kansai International Airport (KIX) serves Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and the wider Kansai region. It opened in September 1994 on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 40 km south-west of central Osaka, and is linked to the mainland at Rinku Town by a road and rail bridge. Because it is offshore, KIX can operate around the clock, which is rare in Japan.
Terminal 1, the long Renzo Piano building, handles full-service airlines and most low-cost carriers, with international arrivals on 1F, domestic flights on 2F and international departures on 4F. Terminal 2 is a basic low-cost terminal used by Peach and a few other budget airlines, linked to Terminal 1 by a free shuttle bus. The Aeroplaza building opposite Terminal 1 holds the station, shops, restaurants, a capsule hotel and Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport.
Getting into the region is straightforward. JR Haruka trains run to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, Nankai trains run to Namba, limousine buses reach Umeda, Kyoto and Kobe, and a fast ferry crosses the bay to Kobe Airport. Japan Airlines and ANA fly from here, and Peach uses KIX as its main base.
KIX opened on 4 September 1994 to take international traffic away from Osaka International Airport at Itami, which is boxed in by housing and has long been limited by noise complaints. Work on the island, Kankūjima, began in 1987. The sea wall was complete in 1989 and the 3.75 km bridge to Rinku Town in 1990. The two reclaimed islands now cover about 1,055 hectares between them.
The seabed clay settled faster than the engineers expected. Forecasts allowed for up to 5.7 m of sinking, and the first island had dropped 8.2 m by 1999, although the rate slowed from about 50 cm a year in 1994 to about 7 cm a year by 2008. The offshore position showed its weak side on 4 September 2018, when Typhoon Jebi pushed seawater across parts of the island and a tanker struck the bridge, cutting the airport off from the mainland. Flights stopped until 6 September, trains returned on 18 September, and the damaged Sky Gate Bridge R section was fully repaired by 8 April 2019. When a strong typhoon is forecast for Osaka Bay, check with your airline and the rail companies before you set out.
Terminal 1 is a four-storey building of about 296,000 m², designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Noriaki Okabe. At about 1.7 km from end to end it is often described as the longest airport terminal in the world, and a people mover called the Wing Shuttle carries passengers along the pier to the outer gates. Allow for that ride when you work out how long you need between security and boarding. The international departure area behind security was renovated, with the work finished in winter 2023.
Terminal 2 is a different experience. It is a single-storey low-cost building with no jet bridges, used by Peach, Spring Airlines and Jeju Air, so you walk or take a bus to the aircraft. It has no direct link to Kansai Airport Station, which means the free shuttle bus is part of every journey in both directions. KIX Sora Park, a green space of about 4 hectares beside Terminal 2, also gives a walking route to Terminal 1.
Two parallel runways of 3,500 m and 4,000 m sit on the two islands. The second opened on 2 August 2007, and round-the-clock operation began a month later. In calendar 2025 KIX handled about 34.1 million passengers, 27.5 million of them international, and 212,224 aircraft movements. The airport is run by Kansai Airports, owned 80 per cent by Orix and Vinci Airports and 20 per cent by Kansai companies such as Hankyu Hanshin Holdings and Panasonic, under a 45-year concession that started on 1 April 2016. FedEx has run its North Pacific cargo hub here since 2014.
Landside at KIX means the public floors of Terminal 1 (1F international arrivals, 2F domestic flights and shops, 3F restaurants, 4F international check-in), the Aeroplaza with the railway station, and the whole of Terminal 2 before security. Airside starts after security and passport control and covers the gate areas reached by the Wing Shuttle trains in Terminal 1.

Tap water in Japan is safe to drink. Drinking fountains are found throughout the terminal, and vending machines sell bottles everywhere.
Pay showers in the 24-hour Kanku Lounge on 2F (booth about ¥500) and in the Refresh Room on 4F (about ¥600 for 30 minutes, towels included).
Charging points are in many seating areas and at the gates. Japan uses type A and B sockets at 100 V; check that your devices accept 100 V.
Coin lockers are spread across the terminal and the Aeroplaza, and staffed baggage counters can store larger items or send them on to your hotel.

Free WiFi covers the terminal buildings. Mobile operator and rental counters in the international arrivals hall sell tourist SIMs and rent pocket WiFi; you need your passport.
KIX has around 47 restaurants and cafés, mostly on 2F and 3F landside. Choice after security is much smaller, so eat before you go through.
Search for what you need: try "sim", "money", "pray", "bag" or "shower".
Nothing matches that search. Try "sim", "wifi", "bag" or "food".
KIX never closes and has some flights through the night. Most restaurants close in the evening, but Matsuya on 3F, the Kanku Lounge and convenience stores stay open. Trains stop around midnight, and the shuttle bus to Terminal 2 runs roughly from early morning to late evening.
The order of things at Kansai, from the aircraft door to the platform and back.
From most Terminal 1 international gates, the Wing Shuttle train brings you to the central building for immigration.
Have your passport ready and, if you used Visit Japan Web, your QR codes for immigration and customs.
Change money, buy an IC card or rail ticket, pick up a SIM or WiFi router at the counters.
Cross to the Aeroplaza on 2F. JR is on the left and Nankai on the right; both have ticket offices with English-speaking staff.
Limousine buses leave from the kerb outside 1F arrivals. Buy tickets from the machines or counter by the stop.
Two hours before an international flight. If you fly Peach or another Terminal 2 airline, go to the Terminal 1 bus stop on 1F and take the free shuttle.
International check-in counters line 4F of Terminal 1. Many airlines offer self-service kiosks.
Japan uses automated gates for departing foreign visitors; follow the signs.
Gates at the ends of the building are reached by the Wing Shuttle trains. They run every few minutes.
Duty-free shops and a few cafés sit near the gates, but food choice is better landside on 3F.
KIX is linked to the mainland by the Sky Gate Bridge, which carries both road and rail. Trains are the fastest option to Namba, Osaka Station and Kyoto; limousine buses are simplest with luggage and go door-to-door to major hotels. Take the Nankai line for Namba and southern Osaka, and JR's Haruka for Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Nankai's limited express rapi:t reaches Namba in as little as 34 minutes and needs a reserved-seat ticket on top of the fare. The slower Nankai Airport Express takes about 45 minutes on an ordinary ticket. The airport gives Haruka times of about 30 minutes to Tennoji, 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka and 75 minutes to Kyoto. Haruka does not call at Namba, so travellers staying around Dotonbori are better served by Nankai. Both companies use Kansai Airport Station in the Aeroplaza opposite Terminal 1. A new line, the Naniwasuji Line, is planned for 2031 to give a faster rail link to Umeda.
Pre-book a car with a driver on bookingMentor before you land. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall, the price is agreed in advance, and you skip the queues. Useful for families, late arrivals and trips straight to Kyoto or Nara.

Free buses between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 2 has no train station.
KIX is a very safe airport. The practical risks are missing the last train, boarding the wrong half of a splitting train, and the long walk to Terminal 2.
