The Fondation Maeght is a private modern art foundation on a hill above Saint-Paul-de-Vence, about 20 km from Nice, opened in 1964 in a building by Josep Lluís Sert, with works by Giacometti, Miró, Chagall and Braque set into its gardens. The Fondation Maeght is a private foundation for modern and contemporary art on the Colline des Gardettes above Saint-Paul-de-Vence, about 20 to 25 kilometres from Nice on the French Riviera. Its buildings, gardens and art were planned together, with works by Giacometti, Miró, Chagall, Braque and Calder made for their places on the site. It suits art lovers who want a morning among pines, sculpture and modern architecture.
The art dealers Aimé and Marguerite Maeght established it, and the culture minister André Malraux inaugurated it on 28 July 1964. It is often described as France's first independent art foundation. The Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, recommended by Joan Miró, designed the buildings, and artists close to the Maeghts made works for the courtyards, walls and gardens.
The collection has grown to about 13,000 objects. Alberto Giacometti is represented by 35 sculptures, and the courtyard named after him is used for concerts and evening events. The Miró Labyrinth is a terraced garden of ceramic and sculpted creatures. Marc Chagall made the mosaic wall known as The Lovers. Georges Braque designed the stained-glass window of the small Saint-Bernard chapel, dated 1962, and a mosaic of fish in the pool. A major exhibition fills the galleries each summer.
