The Musée Granet is the fine arts museum of Aix-en-Provence, on Place Saint-Jean-de-Malte in the Mazarin quarter, about 300 metres south of the Cours Mirabeau. It holds European painting from the 15th to the 20th centuries, nine works by Paul Cézanne and the Planque collection of modern art. It opens at noon, which suits visitors who spend the morning in the old town or at Cézanne's studio.

The collections fill the former priory of the Knights of Malta, next to the church of Saint-Jean-de-Malte. The museum opened in 1838 as the Musée d'Aix and was renamed in 1949, a hundred years after the death of the painter François Marius Granet (1775 to 1849), who left his paintings and drawings to his home town. A major restoration was completed in 2006, when the museum hosted an international exhibition for the centenary of Cézanne's death.

Cézanne and the main collection

Cézanne, born in Aix, is represented by nine works given by the French national museums in 1984, paintings and watercolours among them. The European collection includes Ingres's Jupiter and Thetis and many works by Granet himself, including his views of Rome and church interiors. Twentieth-century works donated by the collector Philippe Meyer add to the modern holdings.

The Planque collection

The collection assembled by Jean Planque went on view in 2011 with more than 180 works, including Degas, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Léger and Giacometti. Part of it is shown in the Granet XXe annex in the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs nearby, which reopens on 8 December 2026 with its own ticket (€4, or €2 reduced). Major exhibitions run each summer.
