In a 16th-century house behind the Palais de Justice in Vieux Lyon, the Musée Miniature et Cinéma shows hyperrealist miniature scenes and original film props and special effects. Adults pay €22.90, children €17.90, and a family pack is €55. It opens daily at 10:00 (13:30 on Tuesdays) and closes at 18:30, or 19:00 at weekends. Film fans and families need about two hours.
The Musée Miniature et Cinéma is a private museum of film special effects and miniature art in the Maison des Avocats at 60 Rue Saint-Jean in Vieux Lyon, part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Site of Lyon. It holds one of the largest collections of original film objects in the world and suits film fans, families with children over about seven and anyone needing a rainy-day visit in Lyon.
The Maison des Avocats, behind the old Palais de Justice, dates from the sixteenth century and keeps a Renaissance courtyard. The museum was founded in 2005 by Dan Ohlmann, a former cabinetmaker, sculptor and interior designer who turned to miniatures. He stepped back in 2021, handing it to the Swiss director and collector Julien Dumont.
The permanent collections fill about 2,000 square metres. The cinema section shows more than 1,000 pieces from European and American studios: costumes, special props, prosthetic makeup, animatronics, stop-motion puppets and preproduction sculptures. Films represented include Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Aliens, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, The Mask, Batman, Harry Potter and Gremlins. Notes explain how each piece was made and used and credit the craftspeople behind it. Some monsters and makeup effects may frighten very young children.
The top floor holds miniature scenes at 1/12 scale, with more than 1,000 works by miniaturists from around the world, including over 100 hyperrealist scenes. Rooms, shops and street views are reproduced down to tiny tools, books and lighting effects.
