Gardens by the Bay is a 101-hectare waterfront park at Marina Bay, known for the Supertree Grove, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories and a nightly light and music show. The outdoor gardens are free, while the conservatories and Skyway need tickets. Plan three to four hours, staying into the evening.
Gardens by the Bay covers 101 hectares of reclaimed land beside the Marina Reservoir in central Singapore, next to the Marina Bay Sands resort. It was planned as part of the government's aim to turn Singapore into a city in a garden, and its largest section, Bay South, opened to the public on 29 June 2012.
The park has three waterfront gardens: Bay South, at 54 hectares, Bay East and Bay Central. The landscape design was led by the British firm Grant Associates, with WilkinsonEyre as architects of the conservatories. Bay East Garden closed in 2023 for redevelopment.
The Supertree Grove is a cluster of tree-like vertical gardens between 25 and 50 metres tall, covered with ferns, orchids and climbing plants. They are not only decorative: they collect rainwater, carry solar panels and vent air from the conservatories. Visitors can walk among their canopies on the OCBC Skyway. The two glass conservatories are the Flower Dome, with a cool, dry Mediterranean climate and plants from five continents, described as the largest columnless glasshouse in the world, and the Cloud Forest, a cool, misty mountain environment with a 42-metre Cloud Mountain covered in plants and a 35-metre indoor waterfall.
Every evening the Supertrees light up for Garden Rhapsody, a free show of lights and music. Themed gardens, lakes and sculptures fill the rest of the park.
Entry to the outdoor gardens and the Supertree Grove is free, while the Flower Dome, Cloud Forest and OCBC Skyway need tickets. Visit the conservatories in the hot afternoon and stay for the evening show. Bayfront MRT station on the Circle and Downtown lines is a short walk away.
When are the gardens and conservatories open? The outdoor gardens, including the Supertree Grove, Serene Garden, Heritage Gardens and the Dragonfly and Kingfisher lakes, open daily from 5 am to 2 am. The Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory open from 9 am to 9 pm. Floral Fantasy, a smaller paid attraction with hanging floral displays, opens from 10 am to 9 pm.
Tickets for the conservatories and Skyway are sold on the official ticketing site and at counters on site, with lower rates for Singapore residents. The Skyway and the Supertree Observatory close on some days for maintenance, so check the closures page before you go. The Supertree Observatory is a viewing deck at the top of the tallest Supertree, reached by lift.
Getting the timing right. Singapore is hot and humid all year, so the cooled conservatories make a good midday stop. The Cloud Forest regularly changes its floral display, and the Flower Dome stages seasonal shows, such as tulips in spring and a Christmas display in December. After the conservatories, walk the Dragonfly Bridge and Marina Barrage area for views of the city, then take a spot in the Supertree Grove for the evening light show.
