What to expect

Himalaya Airlines is a Nepalese international airline based in Kathmandu, flying from Tribhuvan International Airport to the Gulf, Malaysia, Bangladesh and China. It suits Nepali workers travelling to and from Gulf jobs, travellers heading to Lhasa in Tibet, and anyone looking for a direct flight out of Kathmandu to the Middle East.

The Nepali and Tibetan joint venture

Himalaya Airlines was founded in 2014 as a joint venture between Nepal's Yeti World Investment, with 51 per cent, and Tibet Airlines, with 49 per cent. In September 2019 the Chinese share passed to Tibet Civil Aviation Development and Investment. The head office is in Gairidhara, Kathmandu, and the president is Zhou Enyong. It was the second Nepal-China airline venture, after Flying Dragon Airlines, and the Yeti group's second attempt at an international Nepali airline, after Fly Yeti closed in 2008.

Scheduled flights began on 31 May 2016 with one Airbus A320 flying Kathmandu to Doha. Later in 2016 the airline flew Nepal's Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli on a state visit to China. During the pandemic it suspended China flights in February 2020 and grounded scheduled flights from March 2020, while flying rescue and evacuation charters.

Kathmandu hub and current routes

Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu is the only hub. Wikipedia lists 17 destinations over the airline's history, about eight of them current. Current routes include Dhaka, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait City, Dammam, Riyadh and Lhasa, and the airline's website has also listed Dubai and Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Shenzhen. Routes change often, so check the current schedule.

Restrictions and services

Himalaya Airlines does not fly to Europe. It is not part of any airline alliance. Online check-in and a loyalty scheme are available through its website.

Travel tip: schedules on smaller airlines like this one change often. Check that your flight is still running a few days before departure, and confirm the baggage allowance for your ticket on the airline's website.
