Flying from Kathmandu to Dhaka

In short

Both airlines fly nonstop from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu (KTM) to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC): Himalaya Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The 662 km flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes, and it suits returning trekkers, students, business visitors and Nepali travellers heading to Bangladesh.

Himalaya Airlines or Biman?

Himalaya Airlines flies H9678 about five times a week on an Airbus A320, with 20 kg of checked baggage. Biman flies BG372 twice a week on a Boeing 737-800, with 30 kg. Both allow 7 kg in the cabin. The schedule usually decides it, but trekkers carrying gear may value Biman's extra 10 kg.

Allow for traffic on the short ride from Thamel

The airport is only about 6 km east of Thamel. City traffic decides how long the drive takes, so allow more time than the distance suggests and book a taxi the evening before. Both airlines use the international terminal; domestic flights have their own building, with a free shuttle from the main gate.

With a few spare hours, Pashupatinath temple is about 1 km from the airport. Leave bags at the hotel and head for the terminal with a margin for check-in and security.

Winter mornings bring a risk of delay. Tribhuvan has a single runway and suffers from fog as well as congestion, which is why the government has promoted Gautam Buddha and Pokhara airports as diversion alternates. On a December morning, check the flight status before leaving and avoid tight onward connections in Dhaka. An Everest sightseeing flight on departure day is risky for the same reason; those leave early from the domestic terminal and depend on clear weather.

Nepal's 15-minute offset from Bangladesh

Set your watch 15 minutes forward on landing. Nepal set its clocks at five hours 45 minutes ahead of UTC in 1986, and Bangladesh keeps six hours ahead. Neither uses summer time, so the gap holds all year.

From Himalayan hills to the Bengal delta

The hills drop away fast after take-off, and the flat green of the Bengal delta takes over well before Dhaka.

Visa and passport validity for Nepali travellers

Nepali and other foreign travellers should check Bangladesh's visa requirements in advance and carry a passport valid for six months beyond arrival.

Taxis, trains and the expressway from Shahjalal

Shahjalal opens onto Kurmitola, roughly 17 km from central Dhaka. Prepaid taxis and ride-hailing cars wait outside, and Airport Railway Station, directly opposite, has commuter and intercity trains that avoid road traffic.

The raised toll expressway begins at Kawla beside the airport; its first 11.5 km to Farmgate has been open since September 2023, with a ramp to Karwan Bazar since March 2024. BRTC has run a bus along it to Farmgate since 18 September 2023, cheap and quick for anyone with only a cabin bag from this short hop.

Terminal 3 was inaugurated on 7 October 2023 and is set to soft-open on 16 December 2026, with full operations expected in March or April 2027; fully running, it will raise yearly capacity to 24 million passengers from 8 million. For Cox's Bazar or Sylhet, the single-storey domestic terminal on the left of the international buildings is the base for Biman, US-Bangla, Novoair and Air Astra. Clear immigration and customs first, then check in again.
