In short

Marseille's Mucem occupies Rudy Ricciotti's latticed concrete cube at the mouth of the Old Port, joined by footbridge to Fort Saint-Jean. One €11 ticket covers all exhibitions, and the outdoor terraces are free. It opens at 10 AM, closes between 6 PM and 8 PM depending on the season, and shuts on Tuesdays. Allow two to three hours.

The Mucem, the Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée, is a national museum on the waterfront at the entrance to Marseille's Old Port, at 7 promenade Robert Laffont. It covers the cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean from ancient times to today and spreads across a modern building and a 17th-century fortress. It suits visitors who want exhibitions, architecture and sea views in one outing.

The museum opened in June 2013, the year Marseille was European Capital of Culture. The main building, called the J4 after the former port terminal beside it, stands on reclaimed land. Architect Rudy Ricciotti designed it with Roland Carta as a perfect square, 72 metres on each side, wrapped in 15,000 square metres of lattice made of ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (BFUP) that filters the sun, and it stands on 309 slender posts. The building covers 16,500 square metres, of which 3,690 are exhibition space. Ramps circle the glass core between the lattice and the galleries and climb to a rooftop terrace.

A footbridge 135 metres long, suspended 19 metres above the ground without arches or cables, links the J4 roof terrace to Fort Saint-Jean, which guards the northern side of the Old Port. The fort was restored for the museum and now holds exhibition spaces, ramparts, towers and a Mediterranean garden. A second footbridge, about 70 metres long, runs from the fort to the Panier district near the church of Saint-Laurent, which makes a natural route into Marseille's oldest quarter.

Mediterranean themes, gardens and footbridges

The Galerie de la Méditerranée and the temporary exhibitions look at the region through themes such as food, religion, trade, migration and daily life. The temporary shows change through the year and are often the main draw.

The gardens, ramps, footbridges and fort walls are free to walk, and they give wide views over the Old Port, the sea and the city. Summer evenings bring outdoor events and an open-air cinema.
