Karon Beach is a long sandy beach on Phuket's west coast, between Patong and Kata, known for its wide shore, fine sand and relaxed resort strip. Entry is free, which makes it an easy choice for families and couples looking for a calmer base than Patong.
Karon Beach lies on the west coast of Phuket island in southern Thailand, between Patong to the north and Kata to the south. It is one of the longest beaches on the island, running for about 3 kilometres along the Andaman Sea.
The beach was heavily damaged by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 and had largely recovered by 2008. Compared with Patong, Karon is known as a calmer resort area with a broad strip of open sand.
The sand is pale and fine and squeaks underfoot when dry. During the south-west monsoon, from around May, the surf builds and rip currents form; lifeguards post flags, and red means no swimming. Rip currents tend to form near the northern and southern ends of the bay, so swim in the patrolled central areas.
Access to the beach is free. The best swimming season is November to April, when the sea is usually calm and clear. Always follow the lifeguard flags.
Karon is usually counted as the second longest beach in Phuket province. Its calmer pace, compared with Patong next door, draws families and couples, and it has long been popular with Scandinavian holidaymakers.
The 2004 tsunami hit the southern part of the beach hardest. Rebuilding was quick, and by 2008 there was little visible sign of the damage along the seafront.
