Patong is a 3-km crescent of sand on Phuket's west coast, the island's main resort area and nightlife centre, with Bangla Road just behind the beach. The beach is free, while sun loungers and water sports cost extra. Half a day or longer is typical.
Patong Beach curves for about 3 kilometres along a bay on the west coast of Phuket, in the Kathu District of southern Thailand. The town of Patong behind it is the busiest resort area on the island.
Patong was a quiet fishing area until the late 1980s, when it became popular with Western travellers and grew quickly into a large resort town. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck the beach and town, and the area was rebuilt in the following years; warning signs and evacuation routes are now posted.
The beach has fine sand and gentle surf in the dry season, with sun loungers, water sports such as jet skis and parasailing, and food stalls along the beach road. Bangla Road, a pedestrian street of bars and clubs, comes alive after dark. Jungceylon shopping mall and the Banzaan fresh market are a short walk inland.
The calmest sea is from November to April. During the southwest monsoon, from May to October, strong currents make swimming dangerous on some days, so swim only between the flags and follow lifeguard warnings. The beach is free to use, and Phuket airport is about 45 minutes away by road.
How safe is the water at Patong? Patong has a staffed lifeguard service, and local reports in 2024 counted 26 lifeguards at nine posts along the sand, backed by volunteer night patrols. Yellow and red flags mark the guarded swimming zone, and a red flag on its own means no swimming. In heavy monsoon swell the authorities have closed the whole beach for a day or more.
The stretch of sea opposite Bangla Road is set aside for jet skis, so swimmers do better at the northern or southern ends, where the water is also quieter. Lifeguards work daytime shifts only, and flags often stay up after they leave, so night swimming is a bad idea at any time of year.
Getting around the bay. The beach road, Thawewong Road, runs the full length of the sand, and Bangla Road closes to traffic in the evening. Songthaew buses link Patong with Phuket Town, and tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps cover Karon, Kata and the airport. The road over the hill to Kathu and Phuket Town climbs steeply, so allow extra time in traffic.
Patong suits travellers who want restaurants, shopping and nightlife within walking distance of the sand. Families and those after a quiet beach usually stay at Karon or Kata to the south and come to Patong for an evening. Hotels near the beach road fill quickly from December to February, and prices are lowest from May to October.
