Khirai Flower Garden (ক্ষীরাই ফুলের বাগান)

As far as the eyes can see, there are flowers everywhere. Miles upon miles of fields are adorned with winter blossoms. Hidden in West Bengal is this valley of flowers, known as Khirai. Until a year ago, only a handful of people knew about this place, so it was free from the usual tourist rush. Thanks to social media, Khirai has now become one of the favorite winter afternoon getaways for Bengalis. Tourists flock here in winter to witness the vibrant marigolds, asters, chrysanthemums, dahlias, and roses.

With its red dirt roads, colorful flower farms, and the hum of bees, Khirai is now a prominent tourist destination in Bengal. Reaching Khirai in East Midnapore is quite easy. Board a local train from Howrah to Kharagpur or Medinipur and get down at Khirai station, the stop after Panskura. From there, walk along the railway track towards Panskura for about 2 km, where you’ll spot the Kansabati River. Both sides of the river are lined with flower farms. Cross the Kansai Bridge, and you’ll arrive at this floral paradise. Alternatively, you can take a toto (local electric rickshaw) from Panskura station to reach Khirai.

Once in Khirai, you’ll be greeted with nothing but fields of flowers. Marigolds bloom in zigzag patterns across the farms. Visitors are welcomed with flower-made tiaras, belts, and garlands, which are available at very affordable prices. Marigolds, calendulas, chrysanthemums, and other winter flowers cover miles of land. Nearby flows the Kansabati River, which remains dry this season but swells during monsoon. You’ll also hear the roaring sound of trains speeding over the Kansai Bridge.

Winter flower farming begins after the monsoon. Seeds are sown just before Durga Puja, and flower buds start appearing by the end of November. The fields are in full bloom from December to February.

Take a break from your daily routine and visit Khirai on a winter afternoon. Though there are no accommodations or dining facilities yet, Khirai is perfect for a day trip. However, the growing popularity of the area is causing some issues for local farmers. To address this, local organizations are stepping in to improve tourism infrastructure.
