Khon Kaen's single-terminal airport is about 8 km from the city, a 15 to 20 minute drive along Highway 12. It is one of the few Isan airports with a scheduled city bus, ฿15 a trip from about 07:30 to 22:30, while taxis usually charge a flat ฿150 to ฿200 agreed in advance. It closes overnight.
By the bookingMentor Travel Desk · Updated · How we research
Khon Kaen's terminal is new, roomy and rarely crowded. This guide explains which floor does what, how to get into town for ฿15 or door to door, and what the airport does not offer.
Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.
What to expect
Khon Kaen Airport (KKC) is the main airport of Thailand's north-east, in Ban Pet subdistrict about 8 km from central Khon Kaen and 2 km off Highway 12, the road to Loei. The Department of Airports runs it for the Ministry of Transport. It serves Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, and suits business travellers, university visitors and anyone starting an Isan trip with a short hop from Bangkok, Chiang Mai or Phuket.
From a laterite strip to a regional base
Khon Kaen's first airfield was inside the city, with a 1,300 m laterite runway and no navigation aids; flags and ground staff signalled aircraft in and out. It could not grow, and the city needed the land, so a new site on public land west of town was agreed between the Interior and Defence ministries. Construction started in 1962 with a temporary terminal, a hangar and a 1,000 m runway.
On 6 February 1963 a Thai Airways DC-3 carrying 28 passengers landed on a circuit from Bangkok via Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Ratchathani. That date counts as the airport's opening. Khon Kaen was declared a customs airport on 1 September 1991, which lets it handle international flights when an airline schedules them.
Passenger growth since 2013
Khon Kaen handled 1,705,474 passengers in 2025, up 2.25 percent on the year before, with 11,444 aircraft movements. Traffic grew by roughly a fifth each year after 2013 and reached about 2 million in 2017. Freight fell to 369 tonnes in 2025. Thai AirAsia chose the airport as its north-eastern hub, which is why it offers more routes here than at any other Isan airport.
The rebuilt four-storey terminal
The four-storey terminal was rebuilt and enlarged from about 16,500 m² to 44,500 m², raising capacity from 2.8 million to around 5 million passengers a year, under a Department of Airports upgrade costing about 2 billion baht. Arrivals, shops, the Tourist Police and a police office are on the first floor. The ground floor holds a food centre and the taxi service.
Departures take the second floor, with 24 check-in counters and the customs and immigration area used for international departures. Airline offices and the Department of Airports office are on the third floor, together with a sit-down restaurant. The design brief included room for large aircraft such as the A330 and Boeing 777 and four boarding bridges. There is no airline lounge, and the terminal works to the aerodrome's hours, roughly 06:00 to 22:00.
A 3,050 m runway for wide-body jets
One asphalt runway, 03/21, measures 3,050 m by 45 m, long enough for wide-body jets. The airfield lies about 200 m above sea level and has Category 8 fire and rescue cover. The main apron in front of the terminal is 600 m long and can park 12 aircraft of A320 or Boeing 737 size, and a second apron by the old building holds two more. The airfield is shared with military users, and pilots are occasionally asked to switch runway direction during exercises at the Nam Phong range.
Thai AirAsia's domestic routes from Khon Kaen
Every scheduled route is domestic. Thai AirAsia flies to Bangkok Don Mueang, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai and Phuket, so it is the only airline offering direct links to the north and to the Andaman coast. Thai Airways and Thai Vietjet fly to Suvarnabhumi, which suits passengers connecting to long-haul flights, and Thai Lion Air flies to Don Mueang. The Bangkok flight takes a little under an hour. For anything abroad, plan to connect in Bangkok, since international flights at Khon Kaen are limited to occasional charters.
Food, banking and other terminal services
The food centre on the ground floor is the cheapest place to eat, the second floor has snack shops, and the restaurant upstairs serves full meals. A bank branch keeps hours of about 07:30 to 20:00 and a post office about 10:30 to 20:30. ATMs and an exchange counter are in the terminal, along with souvenir shops. Hotels are all in the city; there is nothing on the airport site.
Holiday rushes at Songkran and New Year
Queues at Khon Kaen are short on ordinary weekdays, but every Bangkok flight fills up around Thai holidays, especially Songkran in April and the New Year, when the north-east fills with people returning home. Book early for those dates and arrive at least 90 minutes before departure. Because the terminal closes at night, a very early or very late flight means staying in a city hotel; there is no overnight waiting at the airport.
Landside and airside
Landside at Khon Kaen covers the ground-floor food centre, the first-floor arrivals hall and shops, and the second-floor check-in hall. Airside is the gate area after security. Choice airside is thin, so eat before you go through.

Getting to & from the airport
The airport is a short run from the city along Highway 12. Khon Kaen is one of the few Isan airports with a scheduled city bus. It costs ฿15 a trip between about 07:30 and 22:30 and runs to the city centre and the main bus terminal; a three-day pass at ฿99 also covers buses inside the city. A shared limousine service drops passengers at city hotels from about ฿50 per person, sold at a counter before baggage claim. Taxis wait outside arrivals and usually quote a flat ฿150 to ฿200 to the centre, a 15 to 20 minute drive. Grab works in Khon Kaen, though there is no fixed airport fare. Avis and Budget have self-drive desks in arrivals, and a foreign licence must be paired with an International Driving Permit. For day trips to the dinosaur sites of Phu Wiang, Ubolratana Dam, or onward travel to Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, a car with a driver from bookingMentor meets your flight at a price fixed in advance.

3Check the last busThe city bus stops around 22:30. On a late flight, plan for a taxi or a pre-booked driver.
4Do not count on staying overnightThe terminal closes after the last flights. Book a bed in town if you have an early departure.
Pro tip: buy the limousine ticket while you are still waiting at the belt. The counter is inside, and by the time bags arrive the first cars are already filling.
