What to expect

Thai Lion Air is a low-cost airline based at Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok and an associate of Indonesia's Lion Air Group. It flies Boeing 737s within Thailand and to about 50 destinations across Asia, and suits budget travellers heading from Bangkok to cities such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hat Yai or on short international hops.

Thai Lion Mentari and the Lion Air link

The airline's legal name is Thai Lion Mentari Co. Ltd. It operates with Thai partners as an associate company of Lion Air, so it is a sister carrier of Lion Air, Batik Air and Batik Air Malaysia. The head office is in the Don Mueang district of Bangkok, and the chief executive is Atsawin Yangkiratiwon.

The first Bangkok to Chiang Mai flight in 2013

Thai Lion Air made its first flight on 4 December 2013, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, and began full service the next day. Six days later, on 10 December 2013, it signed an agreement with Malindo Air, now Batik Air Malaysia, allowing both carriers to fly Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok.

Bases in Bangkok and Taipei

Don Mueang is the main base, and Chiang Mai is also marked as a base. Thai Lion Air also has a base at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan, where it flies routes to Japan that do not touch Thailand, including Taipei to Okinawa, which was kept for the winter 2026 season.

Where does Thai Lion Air fly?

The network covers about 50 destinations. Inside Thailand it links Bangkok with the main tourist and regional cities. Abroad it serves China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and the Philippines. A Delhi route was scheduled to start on 14 November 2025. Many routes have been dropped over the years, and seasonal changes are common on Japan and Korea flights, so check the timetable for your dates.

Interline agreements with Lion Air and APG

Thai Lion Air is not in a global alliance. It has interline agreements with its parent Lion Air and with APG Airlines.

Getting to Don Mueang

Don Mueang is Bangkok's older airport and serves many low-cost airlines. Thai Lion Air does not use Suvarnabhumi, the city's other main airport, so anyone arriving there on another airline has to travel across Bangkok to reach a Thai Lion Air flight.
