Klagenfurt travel guide
A dragon on Neuer Platz, the Lend canal bike path and the Wörthersee beach
Klagenfurt is Carinthia's capital, a compact Renaissance old town at the eastern end of the Wörthersee. Visit from June to September for the lake beach and the bike path to Velden. Two days covers it, longer as a base for the lakes. Prices are above average, and Schengen rules give many visitors 90 days.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of Carinthia and Austria's sixth-largest city, at the eastern tip of the Wörthersee near the Slovenian border. Its old town is a grid of Renaissance squares. On Neuer Platz stands the Lindwurm, a 16th-century stone dragon whose head was modelled on a woolly rhinoceros skull dug up nearby.
The lake is a bike ride away. A cycle path follows the Lend canal from Heiligengeistplatz to the Strandbad, a lake beach with room for about 12,000 people, then carries on along the north shore to Velden. Next to the beach, Minimundus (scale models of famous buildings, open from late March to early November) shares space with the Europapark, where peacocks roam.
Getting here is faster than it used to be. Since the Koralm tunnel opened in December 2025, trains from Graz take as little as 41 minutes. Villach is 40 minutes away with departures every half hour. Evenings, the Stadttheater stages opera and drama; by day, eat at the indoor stalls of the Benediktinerplatz market.

Getting there
KLU, the Koralm tunnel and Hauptbahnhof
Since the Koralm tunnel opened in December 2025, trains from Graz run 29 times a day, the fastest in 41 minutes, which is now the quickest route from Vienna too. Klagenfurt's small airport (KLU) has flights from Vienna and a few other cities, with bus 4 to the centre. The Hauptbahnhof is 15 minutes' walk from the old town.

Where to stay
Inside the Ring, by the Europapark or near the Hauptbahnhof
Klagenfurt has two halves, the old town inside the ring road and the Wörthersee shore 4 km west, joined by the Lend canal path. Choose the old town for the theatre and squares, the Europapark end for the Strandbad and Minimundus, and the station only for a night between trains.
- Old town
- Walk to Neuer Platz, the market and the Stadttheater, the best choice without a car
- Near the Europapark
- Next to the Strandbad and Minimundus, quiet after dark and a bus or bike ride from the squares
- Near the Hauptbahnhof
- Handy for early trains to Graz or Villach, ten minutes on foot from the old town, but plain streets with little to do in the evening
- The university youth hostel area lies east of the centre towards the campus; it is cheap but a bus ride from both the squares and the lake.
Getting around
Heiligengeistplatz buses and the Lend canal cycle path
Walk inside the ring road. City buses leave Heiligengeistplatz, with tickets from the driver, and a bike is best for the lake: follow the Lend canal path 4 km to the Strandbad and on to Velden, returning by train. Summer boats sail to Maria Wörth, Pörtschach and Velden.

The Lindwurm, Alter Platz and an afternoon at the Strandbad
Morning one belongs to the old town. Start at Neuer Platz with the Lindwurm, the dragon whose legend gave the city its emblem, then walk north to Alter Platz, the oldest square, and the Landhaus, seat of the Carinthian parliament, where the hall of arms is painted with hundreds of coats of arms. Finish at the Benediktinerplatz market for lunch at the indoor stalls.
Spend the afternoon on culture or a climb. Readers can visit the Robert Musil museum in the writer's birthplace on Bahnhofstraße; walkers can head up into the Kreuzbergl woods and eat at the Schweizerhaus, about 15 minutes on foot from the centre. In the evening, check what is on at the Stadttheater, Carinthia's main stage for opera and drama.
On day two, hire a bike at Neuer Platz and follow the Lend canal west from Heiligengeistplatz to the Strandbad for a swim. Minimundus, the Europapark and the reptile zoo on Villacher Straße are all next door, so families can fill a whole morning there. Fit riders can carry on along the north shore of the Wörthersee to Velden and take the train back, or board a lake boat instead and let the shore slide past.
Kasnudeln, Reindling and the Benediktinerplatz market hall
Carinthian cooking leans on dough and dairy. The dish to order first is Kärntner Kasnudeln, plump half-moon pasta filled with curd cheese, potato and mint, crimped by hand along the edge and served with browned butter. Every inn has its own version, and locals will tell you the crimping matters as much as the filling.
The Benediktinerplatz market is the easiest place to start. Farmers sell cheese, speck and seasonal fruit outside, and the indoor hall has stalls serving plain Austrian lunches. Look for Reindling, a ring-shaped yeast cake rolled with cinnamon, sugar and raisins that Carinthians bake for Easter and eat with coffee the rest of the year. Fish from the lakes, char and whitefish especially, turns up on summer menus around the Wörthersee.
For a sit-down meal with a regional slant, the Schweizerhaus on the Kreuzbergl cooks a lighter version of Carinthian food with some vegetarian dishes. The cheaper places cluster around Benediktinerplatz and Heuplatz, where snack bars and sausage stands serve students from the university. With a slow afternoon, take a Reindling slice and a coffee to the Europapark and eat it by the lake.
