Kite and windsurf
Schools at the foot of the cliff teach in the tramontane; beginners stay in marked zones.
La Franqui is a seaside village of Leucate on the Aude coast, at the foot of a white limestone cliff, with long open beaches and some of the windiest conditions on the French Mediterranean. Families come on calm days and kitesurfers when the tramontane blows. The beach is free at any hour, with summer lifeguards on marked stretches. Half a day is usual.
La Franqui is a seaside village in the commune of Leucate, Aude, on the Mediterranean coast of Occitanie, set between the Leucate cliff, the sea and the lagoons. It suits families on calm days and kitesurfers, windsurfers and sand yachters when the tramontane blows. The Leucate tourist office describes it as the first seaside resort in the Aude, dating from the 19th century.
La Franqui beach is fine sand at the foot of the cliffs, sloping gently into shallow water that suits young children. It has a supervised swimming zone adapted for disabled bathers, a first-aid post, toilets, a playground, shops and restaurant terraces. A wooden seafront and footpaths run along the beach under century-old pines, and the car park is free.
North of the village, the Plage des Coussoules runs for about 8 km of ochre sand toward Port-la-Nouvelle and is around 400 m wide. It is a natural beach inside a Natura 2000 area, with dunes and lagoons behind. You reach it along the waterfront from La Franqui or from the Coussoules car park beside the campsite. The beach is divided into zones for swimming, sand yachting and sailing, and lifeguards watch it in season. Between the two beaches, the Grazel is a natural channel to the sea where flamingos, cormorants and egrets feed.
The tramontane, a strong north-west wind, makes La Franqui one of the main spots on this coast for windsurfing, kitesurfing, foiling and sand yachting, all year round. Kitesurfing is allowed only in the marked zone. The KSL kite club works from the former first-aid post, and the Cercle de Voile du Cap Leucate rents sand yachts and gives lessons. Every Easter the Mondial du Vent, held here since 1997, brings leading kitesurf, windsurf and wingfoil riders to the Coussoules beach.
Stone steps at the end of the beach climb the cliff, where the view reaches Port-la-Nouvelle, Narbonne and, on clear days, Sète. The Sentier du Guetteur follows the clifftop to the Rocher de la Sorcière and Leucate Plage, which is sheltered from the tramontane. The writer Henry de Monfreid, known for his voyages on the Red Sea, was born at La Franqui on 14 November 1879.
