Narbonne-Plage is the seaside district of Narbonne on the Aude coast, about 15 km east of the town, with a Blue Flag beach of nearly 5 km, a marina and the limestone Massif de la Clape behind. Access is free at any time, and lifeguards work only in summer. Families, campers and water-sports fans usually give it half a day.
Narbonne-Plage is a family seaside resort on the Mediterranean in the Aude department of Occitanie, part of the commune of Narbonne, about 15 km east of the town and 10 km north-east of Gruissan. Its sandy beach runs for more than 5 km and has held the Blue Flag since 1988. It suits families, campers and water-sports fans.
The resort sits inside the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Regional Natural Park, at the foot of the Massif de la Clape, a dry limestone upland that separates it from Narbonne, with Saint-Pierre-la-Mer 3 km to the north. Bathers used this shore from the early twentieth century. The resort itself owes much to Louis Madaule, mayor of Narbonne from 1948 to 1956, and to René Funel, head of the town's technical services. It grew quickly in the 1960s.
The soft sand stretches for more than 5 km and is about 150 metres wide, with safe, gently shelving water. Narbonne-Plage was one of the first resorts in Occitanie to receive the Blue Flag. In summer lifeguards watch from first-aid posts 1 to 4, where outdoor showers and posted beach rules are also found. Mats at each post help wheelchair users and pushchairs reach the water, and the Handiplage service at post 2 lends equipment to disabled bathers in summer. Smoking has been banned on the beach since July 2025. Dogs on a lead are allowed on the natural beach beyond post 4 from October to April.
The marina, built between 1981 and 1986, has 600 moorings and has held the Ports propres environmental label since 2001; it is home to a sailing school and a diving club. Sand yachting, jet-skiing and kitesurfing are offered for beginners and experienced riders, and deckchairs and pedal boats can be hired in summer. On land there are tennis courts, a swimming pool and pétanque grounds, a 2.5 km seafront promenade and the 3 km Les Exals botanical and geological trail, open all year.
Free outdoor shows, markets, concerts and children's shows run through the year, especially in summer, along with surf fishing competitions. The Natur'Ailes international kite festival takes place on the last weekend of May.
