Lincang travel guide
Ancient tea trees, Va villages and the black-faced Monihei Carnival
A prefecture of tea hills and minority villages in south-west Yunnan, with two airports and a railway from Dali. Come for the Monihei Carnival in Cangyuan around 1 May, or for the dry, mild months from November to April; allow four or five days. Prices are moderate, and many passports get 30 days visa-free in China.
Lincang is a prefecture-level city in south-west Yunnan, running down to the Myanmar border, and its name on a teapot means more to most Chinese than its name on a map. This is pu'er and black-tea country, and in early May it is also the place where the Va people of Cangyuan County smear visitors with black paste at the Monihei Carnival.
Do not expect one city. The urban seat, Linxiang District, is a modern hill town of stupas, parks and the Yulong Lake reservoir, but the reasons to come are spread across seven counties. Fengqing has the tea tree that the prefecture claims as the oldest cultivated one in the world, about 3,200 years old, at Jinxiu village in Xiaowan town.
Cangyuan Va Autonomous County is the south-western corner, where about 77 per cent of residents are Va. Its seat, Mengdong, hosts the carnival on Monihei Square, and the Va village of Wengding, rebuilt as a heritage site after a fire in 2021, stands in the hills near Cangyuan Washan Airport.
Altitude keeps the temperatures even. Highs barely move from 20C in December to 27C in summer, and almost all the rain falls between May and October.
Give the region four or five days: one in Linxiang, one or two in the tea hills of Fengqing or Shuangjiang, and two in Cangyuan.

Best time to visit Lincang
Month by month, so you can pick the weather and the crowds you want.
Rainfall stays under 45 mm a month, highs run from 20C to 27C and the tea hills are at their clearest; nights can drop to 6C in January.
Spring picking in the tea gardens, then Monihei in Mengdong from 1 May before the rains build.
July brings about 256 mm of rain and August 215 mm; mountain roads can be slowed by landslides, though the countryside is at its greenest.
The Monihei Carnival in Mengdong runs over the first days of May (1 to 4 May in 2026), which overlaps the national Labour Day holiday, so book flights into Cangyuan and county-town rooms weeks ahead.

Getting there
Boshang airport, Washan airport and the Dali line
Two airports serve the prefecture. Lincang Boshang Airport (LNJ) is the gateway for the city seat in Linxiang, with flights from Kunming and a few other Chinese cities; a taxi or airport bus covers the run into town. Cangyuan Washan Airport (CWJ), opened in December 2016 in Nuoliang township, sits in the far south-west and is the one to use for the Monihei Carnival and Wengding village; its single runway handles mostly Kunming flights. By rail, the Dali-Lincang line connects the city seat with Dali, where you can change for Kunming and the rest of Yunnan's network. Long-distance buses link Linxiang with the county towns, including Mengdong in Cangyuan, but the mountain roads make these slow trips of several hours.
- Lincang Boshang Airport (LNJ)
- Gateway for Linxiang, flights mostly from Kunming
- Cangyuan Washan Airport (CWJ)
- Opened 2016, closest to Mengdong and Wengding
- Dali-Lincang railway
- Rail link to Dali and the wider Yunnan network
- For the carnival, fly Kunming to Cangyuan directly; the overland trip from Linxiang takes several hours.
- Keep your passport handy: the prefecture borders Myanmar and you may meet ID checks on roads near the frontier.
Where to stay
Linxiang, Mengdong or a tea-hill guesthouse
Choose your base by the reason for the trip. Linxiang has the widest choice of business-style hotels and restaurants, Mengdong in Cangyuan has hotels close to Monihei Square that sell out around 1 May, and Fengqing town suits tea lovers visiting the ancient trees and black-tea factories. Confirm that hotels accept foreign guests.
- Linxiang District
- City seat with the most hotels, near West City Gate Park and Yulong Lake
- Mengdong, Cangyuan
- County seat and carnival venue; rooms sell out around 1 May
- Fengqing County town
- Base for Jinxiu village's ancient tea tree and the tea estates
- Wengding area
- Rebuilt heritage village with very limited lodging; most visitors stay in Mengdong
- Hotels accepting foreign guests are fewer in the county towns; confirm when booking.
Getting around
County buses, hired drivers and Didi in Linxiang
Distances are long and the roads twist through mountains, so plan for slow transfers. In Linxiang, taxis and the Didi ride-hailing app cover the city, and the central parks and stupas are walkable. Between counties, long-distance buses leave from Linxiang's bus station for Fengqing, Shuangjiang, Gengma and Cangyuan, with several hours on the road for the further ones. Hiring a car with a driver for a day is the practical way to reach tea villages and Va settlements that buses skip. In Cangyuan, the airport, Mengdong and Wengding are close enough to visit in a day by taxi. Mobile payment (WeChat Pay or Alipay) is the norm everywhere; carry some cash for villages.
- Taxis and Didi
- Easy within Linxiang and Mengdong
- Intercounty buses
- From Linxiang to each county seat, slow but regular
- Hired car and driver
- Best for tea villages and Wengding
- Download an offline translation app; English is rarely spoken outside a few hotels.

Why travelers love it

- Few foreigners travel here, so signage and menus are almost entirely in Chinese.
- Border areas have checkpoints; keep your passport with you on day trips.

Weather in Lincang, month by month
Lincang has a mild subtropical highland climate: a long dry season from November to April and a monsoon that peaks in July. Each month shows average highs, lows and rainfall.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Lincang (China Meteorological Administration, via Wikipedia).
Four days across Lincang from Yulong Lake to Mengdong
Four days cover Lincang's highlights. Spend the first in Linxiang at West City Gate Park, the Mengwang Stupa and Yulong Lake, the second in Fengqing for the 3,200-year-old tea tree at Jinxiu village, the third travelling south to Mengdong in Cangyuan, and the fourth at the Va village of Wengding.
Day one, Linxiang. Fly in to Boshang Airport from Kunming. Spend the morning at West City Gate Park and the Mengwang Stupa, then walk the promenade around Yulong Lake in the late afternoon when families come out to stroll.
Day two, Fengqing. Drive north to Fengqing County. Go first to Jinxiu village in Xiaowan town to see the ancient cultivated tea tree, about 3,200 years old, then visit a Dianhong black-tea factory in the afternoon. Stay overnight in Fengqing town.
Day three, south to Cangyuan. This is the long transfer. Either return to Linxiang and fly, or take an intercounty bus or hired car south via Shuangjiang and Gengma. Arrive in Mengdong by evening and walk around Monihei Square.
Day four, Va country. Morning at Wengding, the Va village in the hills near Cangyuan Washan Airport, reopened to visitors at the end of 2022 after reconstruction following a 2021 fire. Ask locally about the ancient cliff paintings in the county. Fly out from Cangyuan in the afternoon. During carnival week, swap day four for a full day of Monihei in Mengdong.
Dianhong tea, Va chicken porridge and the Lincang night stalls
Tea comes first in Lincang. Fengqing is the home of Dianhong black tea, and the prefecture produces large amounts of pu'er, so taste several rounds in tea shops before buying. In Cangyuan, try Va chicken porridge and village rice liquor, and in Linxiang eat grilled skewers, mixian rice noodles and Dai-style sour dishes at evening food streets.
Tea comes before food here. Fengqing is the home of Dianhong, Yunnan's malty black tea, and Lincang as a whole produces large quantities of pu'er, both the aged dark kind and fresh green maocha. Shuangjiang's Mengku area grows a prized large-leaf variety. Most tea shops will brew several rounds for you to taste before you buy, and many factories welcome visitors.
The Va kitchen in Cangyuan is the other highlight. Look for Va chicken porridge, rice cooked soft with shredded chicken and local herbs, and for dishes flavoured with wild greens, chilli and ginger. Sticky rice, roasted meats and fiery dipping sauces show up at festivals, and Va villages brew their own rice liquor, which you will be offered on any visit.
In Linxiang, evening food streets serve grilled skewers, rice noodles in broth (mixian) and Dai-style sour and spicy dishes that reflect the prefecture's mix of peoples. Mornings start with a bowl of noodles from a small shop near your hotel.
Bring a translation app: menus are in Chinese, and pointing at what the next table is eating is often the best way to order.
Black faces at the May Monihei Carnival and Lincang's rains
Most visitors come to Lincang for the Monihei Carnival in Mengdong, Cangyuan, over the first days of May, when participants daub each other with black paste as a Va blessing. The dry season from November to April is mild and clear, May brings rain, and the monsoon peaks in July at about 256 mm.
The Monihei Carnival is the event that brings visitors to the far south-west. It runs over the first days of May (1 to 4 May in 2026) in Mengdong, the seat of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County, centred on Monihei Square. Participants daub each other with a black paste, a Va blessing that traditionally drove off misfortune, and the days mix parades, dancing and drumming.
The weather explains the timing. Lincang's averages show a long dry season: January highs of 21C with lows of 6C and about 22 mm of rain, March at 25C and 11C, and April at 27C with 43 mm. In May the rain jumps to about 101 mm, and the monsoon peaks in July at 256 mm before easing to 108 mm in October and just 37 mm in November. December is the coolest month, with highs of 20C and lows near 7C.
Spring is also tea-picking season, from about March, when the first flush is plucked in Fengqing and Shuangjiang. For a calmer visit, come between November and February, when the skies are clear. Lincang links easily with the rest of Yunnan: fly via Kunming, or ride the railway to Dali and beyond.
