What to expect

LOT Polish Airlines is the flag carrier of Poland, flying from its hub at Warsaw Chopin Airport to about 100 destinations in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. It suits travellers heading to Poland and those connecting through Warsaw between Central and Eastern Europe and long-haul cities in North America and Asia.

One of the oldest airlines still flying

LOT was founded on 29 December 1928 and began operating on 1 January 1929. Its Flying Crane logo, designed in 1929, was introduced in 1931 and is still on the tails today. The airline joined Star Alliance in 2003, and in 2012 it became the first European airline to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. In 2018 it was ranked the quietest airline at London Heathrow.

The company, Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT, is owned by the Polish state through Polish Aviation Group and has its head office in Warsaw. In 2025 it reported revenue of PLN 10.22 billion and a net profit of PLN 350 million, and it set a monthly record of about 1.19 million passengers in July 2025. Skytrax named LOT the best airline in Eastern Europe in June 2025.

Warsaw hub, Krakow and about 102 destinations

Warsaw Chopin is the main hub and Krakow is a secondary hub. Gdansk and Wroclaw are focus cities. LOT serves about 102 destinations. Many schedules are built around connections in Warsaw, so the airport works as a transfer point between Central and Eastern European cities and the long-haul network. LOT ended its long-haul flights from Budapest in early 2025 and has planned to restart Kyiv and Lviv once a ceasefire allows.

Star Alliance membership links LOT with partners such as Lufthansa, United and Singapore Airlines for through-ticketing and lounge access.

Miles & More

LOT uses the Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More programme.

LOT flights earn Miles & More miles and status, which can be spent on LOT, Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance flights.

LOT does not run its own frequent flyer programme. It uses Miles & More, the Lufthansa Group scheme, with Basic, Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle tiers. Miles earned on LOT count towards the same account used on Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian.

Travel tip: if you connect in Warsaw between a European flight and a long-haul flight outside the Schengen area, leave time for passport control. Check in online on the LOT website or app, and check the baggage allowance for your fare type there before you travel.

Baggage allowance

On LOT, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your LO e-ticket.

Cheap tickets

A few booking habits that tend to cut the cost of flying LOT.

  1. 01

    Look across the week

If your dates can move, look at LO flights across the whole week. Midweek seats are often cheaper than weekend ones.

    Midweek flights
  2. 02

    Avoid peak seasons

Summer and Christmas, when the Polish diaspora travels home, are the busiest periods on North American routes.

    Summer & Christmas
  3. 03

Price the bundle, not the base fare

Look at the next LOT fare up: if it bundles a hold bag or easier changes, it may beat the basic fare plus extras.
