What to expect

MIAT Mongolian Airlines is the state-owned flag carrier of Mongolia, flying from Chinggis Khaan International Airport near Ulaanbaatar to domestic airports in western and southern Mongolia and to 21 destinations in all, across Asia and to Europe. It is the largest airline in Mongolia and the main choice for travellers flying into the country from Japan, South Korea, China or Europe.

The 1956 first flight to Irkutsk and independence

MIAT began regular flights on 7 July 1956 with an Antonov An-2 biplane from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk in Siberia. In 1993 it became an independent state-owned enterprise, and it has since moved to a Boeing fleet. The head office is in Ulaanbaatar, and the airline employs about 1,600 people.

Two recent firsts stand out. In June 2020 MIAT flew the first nonstop flight between Mongolia and North America, to Seattle, carrying Mongolians home and aid supplies during the pandemic. In October 2022 it became the first airline to fly a Boeing 737 MAX into China after Chinese regulators grounded the type in 2019.

Ulaanbaatar hub and domestic routes

Chinggis Khaan International Airport, which replaced the old city airport, is the hub. Domestic flights reach Khovd, Moron, Olgii, Dalanzadgad and other airports. The international network covers China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, plus Istanbul and Frankfurt in Europe. Some leisure routes, such as Phuket and Osaka, run only in certain seasons.

Planning a trip

Domestic flights use smaller aircraft and can be affected by weather. Chinggis Khaan International lies well outside the city centre, so allow extra time to get there.

Travel tip: check the baggage rules for your fare on miat.com before booking, especially if your trip includes a domestic flight, as smaller aircraft can carry less.
