What to expect

Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier of Singapore, based at Singapore Changi Airport, and it suits travellers flying long haul between Asia, Europe, North America and Australia who want a single connection at Changi. It began flying under its own name in 1972, with roots in Malayan Airways from 1947. Goh Choon Phong is chief executive. In the 2024/25 financial year it carried 26.5 million passengers with a load factor of 86.1%.

From Changi the airline serves about 87 destinations across Southeast Asia, North Asia, South Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, North America and Africa. Flights SQ23 and SQ24 between Singapore and New York JFK, relaunched on 9 November 2020 and flown three times a week, rank as the longest scheduled flights in the world. The Airbus A350-900ULR built for these routes covers about 15,300 km in roughly 19 hours.

Low-cost flying in the group is handled by its wholly owned subsidiary Scoot. Singapore Airlines also holds a 25.1% stake in Air India following the Vistara merger in November 2024.

Singapore Airlines has been a member of Star Alliance since April 2000, linking it with partners such as United Airlines, Lufthansa, ANA and Air New Zealand. Skytrax rates it a five-star airline and named it the world's best airline in 2023 and 2024.

The fleet had 151 passenger aircraft and 12 freighters in September 2025. Passenger types include:

  • Airbus A350-900, including ultra-long-range versions
  • Airbus A380-800
  • Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 787-10
  • Boeing 737 aircraft on shorter regional routes

Cabin classes are Suites on the A380, First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy. The cabins on offer depend on the aircraft. The airline's branding centres on the Singapore Girl, the name for its cabin crew, and its lounges carry the SilverKris name.

The loyalty programme is KrisFlyer. Frequent travellers in premium cabins can also qualify for the PPS Club.

Travel tip: allow time at Changi if you need to connect onto a Scoot flight, which is often booked and ticketed separately.

Baggage allowance

Singapore Airlines does not give every passenger the same allowance: the route, the cabin and the fare you buy each change it. Your SQ e-ticket shows what you have.

Singapore Airlines sets one allowance for short-haul and another for long-haul, and its premium cabins always carry more than the cheapest economy fare. Check the route-by-route figures on singaporeair.com.

Pro tip: a Scoot flight booked on its own ticket has Scoot's bag rules. Check both allowances if your trip mixes the two airlines.
