The nave
Start under the great arches.
Bordeaux's contemporary art museum fills the Entrepôt Lainé, an 1824 warehouse for colonial goods whose huge arched nave hosts large installations. Admission is by museum ticket. It opens 10 AM to 6 PM from Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays, with the desk shutting about 30 minutes before closing. An hour and a half covers the current shows.
The CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux is the city's contemporary art museum, in the Entrepôt Lainé at 7 Rue Ferrère in the Chartrons, the old wine merchants' quarter just north of the historic centre. It shows art from the 1960s onward in a vast former warehouse, and suits visitors who like large installations and anyone exploring the Chartrons and the Garonne quays.
The architect Claude Deschamps built the stone warehouse in 1824 to store colonial goods such as sugar, coffee and cotton arriving at the port. In 1973 Jean-Louis Froment founded the CAPC arts centre there, and it was renamed the CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain de Bordeaux in 1983. The architects Denis Valode and Jean Pistre restored the building, and the museum formally opened on 17 May 1984. It reopened after further works in June 1990.
The heart of the building is a long central nave lined with arcades, with heavy timber and stone that recall its commercial past. Artists are often invited to make work that answers its scale. Keith Haring made his series The Ten Commandments for the nave in 1985, and his mural in the lift shaft remains. Early exhibitions featured Gina Pane, Andy Warhol and Christian Boltanski, and the collection includes Richard Long and Sol LeWitt.
The museum shows rotating displays from its collection alongside temporary exhibitions. In late 2026 the collection exhibition Pollen is on view until 2 January 2028, and Quoi qu'il en soit, a project by the choreographer Fanny de Chaillé and the artist Thomas Hirschhorn, runs from 12 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Guided tours of the exhibitions run on Saturdays and Sundays at 15:00.
