A one-terminal airport about 18 km west of Nakhon Phanom, 20 to 30 minutes from the Mekong riverfront. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air both fly to Bangkok Don Mueang. There is no rail link and the shared limousine van is the only public option. Arrive 90 minutes ahead, as bag drop closes 60 minutes before departure.

A short, practical guide to a small terminal: what to expect at check-in and arrivals, how to reach the Mekong riverfront and what you will and will not find inside.

What to expect
Nakhon Phanom Airport (KOP) is a small domestic airport in Nong Yat subdistrict, about 15 km west of Nakhon Phanom town in Thailand's far north-east, roughly 18 km by road from the Mekong riverfront. It has flights to Bangkok Don Mueang only. It suits travellers heading for the riverside town, the great stupa of Phra That Phanom, or the border crossing to Thakhek in Laos.
A wartime airfield turned provincial airport
The runway you land on was built in 1962 by US Navy Seabees of Mobile Construction Battalion 3, paid for under the American Military Assistance Program, on the site of a small laterite airstrip. The airfield opened on 1 June 1963. During the Vietnam War it was Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, known to American crews as NKP, one of the front-line bases for operations over Laos.
The US Air Force's 56th Special Operations Wing was based here, along with forward air control squadrons flying under the call sign "Nail", search and rescue squadrons, and a US Navy observation squadron in 1967 and 1968. Planning for the 1970 Son Tay prison camp raid in North Vietnam involved the base. The last American units left on 1 October 1975, after the Thai government asked US forces to withdraw.
Today the land belongs to the Royal Thai Navy, which uses the base for riverine patrols on the Mekong, and the Department of Airports runs the civil side. The present passenger terminal opened in October 2000.
One compact terminal and limited food
Nakhon Phanom has one compact terminal of about 4,800 m², and check-in, security and the gate sit a short walk apart. It handles domestic flights only. Food inside is limited, so most passengers eat in town before leaving. The car park holds about 140 vehicles. The aerodrome's published hours are 06:00 to 21:00 local time, and the building is busiest around the morning and evening Bangkok departures; it does not stay open through the night.
There is no lounge, no hotel on site and no left-luggage service. Hotels, restaurants and banks are all in town, and the official aeronautical publication lists only limousine vans and car rental as transport at the airport itself.
A 2,500 m runway for 737s and A320s
The single runway, 15/33, is 2,500 m long and 45 m wide, laid in asphalt and concrete. It takes Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft, and the apron has space for three of them at once. The airfield sits 179 m above sea level and carries Category 7 fire and rescue cover. Customs and immigration are available only on request, which is why there are no scheduled international flights.
The airport handled 467,583 passengers in 2025, up 4.05 percent on 2024 and its busiest year so far, with 3,237 aircraft movements. Every one of those passengers flew to or from Bangkok.
Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air to Don Mueang
Competing airlines share the route. Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air both fly to Bangkok Don Mueang, with several departures a day between them. There are no flights to Suvarnabhumi; passengers connecting to an international flight there need to transfer between Bangkok's two airports, which takes at least an hour by road. Book early for the end of the rainy season in October, when the Illuminated Boat Procession on the Mekong fills the town.
Check-in times and the cool season
Arrive about 90 minutes before departure; with only one or two flights at a time, queues are short outside holiday periods. The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for exploring the river towns, while the rains run from about May to October. Songkran in April and long weekends bring full flights in both directions.
Landside and airside
Landside is the public check-in hall and arrivals area; airside is the gate lounge beyond security. At Nakhon Phanom both sit on one level and are only a few minutes' walk apart, so there is little reason to go through security early.

Not suitable
The terminal works to the flight schedule, with activity concentrated around the morning and evening Don Mueang departures. The terminal is not known to open 24 hours, so plan to arrive close to your flight time.
Arriving and departing, step by step
Nakhon Phanom handles domestic flights only, so there is no immigration or customs on arrival and the whole process is quick.
Arriving
From the aircraft to the riverfront
1
Walk to the terminal
Aircraft park on the apron close to the building, so you walk or take a short bus ride to the arrivals door.
2
Collect your bags
There is one baggage reclaim area. Bags from a single A320 or 737 usually arrive within 15 to 20 minutes.
3
Find your transfer
Taxis and the shared airport van wait outside arrivals. If you booked a car with driver, your driver meets you at the exit.
4
Head into town
The drive to the riverfront takes 20 to 30 minutes. Have your hotel's name written in Thai for the driver.
Departing
From the kerb to your Don Mueang flight
1
Arrive 90 minutes early
That leaves time for bag drop, which closes 60 minutes before departure on Thai AirAsia.
2
Check in
Online check-in saves a queue; you still need the counter if you have a bag to drop.
3
Security
One security checkpoint leads to the gate area. Standard Thai liquid rules apply.
4
Board
Be at the gate when boarding is called; aircraft turn around quickly here.
Getting to & from the airport
The airport lies west of town; the drive to the Mekong riverfront takes 20 to 30 minutes. There is no rail link, and public transport is limited to the shared airport van. A shared limousine van waits outside arrivals and drops passengers at hotels in town; its last published fare was ฿100 per person in 2016, so expect a little more now. Metered taxis also meet flights, with fares to town of around ฿200. Confirm the meter or agree the price before you set off. A car with a driver booked on bookingMentor meets your flight and can carry on along the river road to Phra That Phanom, 53 km south of town, or to the Ho Chi Minh house at Ban Na Chok. There is no rail link and no public bus from the terminal. Friendship Bridge 3 crosses the Mekong to Thakhek in Khammouane province. Pedestrians cannot walk across, so go into town first and take the Thai–Lao international bus from Nakhon Phanom bus station. Entry rules for Laos depend on your passport, and a visa on arrival is not available to every nationality, so check the Lao government's rules before you fly in.
Pre-book a car with a driver on bookingMentor. Your driver meets the flight, and the same car can take you down the river road to Phra That Phanom or to the bridge to Laos.
Metered taxis meet arriving flights. Wikivoyage quotes about ฿200 to town, based on a ฿30 flag fall and about ฿10 per kilometre. Agree the fare or confirm the meter before setting off.

Security & safety
Nakhon Phanom is a quiet airport with no known safety problems. The usual precautions apply.
1Confirm the fare firstAgree the taxi fare or make sure the meter is running before you leave. About ฿200 to town is a fair benchmark.
2Book ahead for the boat festivalDuring Lai Ruea Fai in October, flights, taxis and hotels all fill up. Pre-book your transfer so you are not left waiting after the last flight.
3Carry cashTaxis and the shared van expect baht in cash. Withdraw enough in Bangkok before you fly.
4Plan the Laos crossingYou cannot walk over Friendship Bridge 3. Use the international bus from town rather than accepting a ride offered at the airport.
Pro tip: the 12 km riverside path north of town is best cycled early in the morning; by midday the Mekong bank has little shade.

Everything travellers ask before flying through Nakhon Phanom. Checked against Department of Airports figures, airline announcements and travel references, October 2026.
About 18 km by road, which takes 20 to 30 minutes by taxi. Sources quote anything from 13 to 20 km depending on where in town you are going.
Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, both to Bangkok Don Mueang. Thai Lion Air started the route on 19 June 2025.
Not at present. All scheduled flights use Don Mueang, so if you land at Suvarnabhumi on an international flight you need to transfer across Bangkok.
It was designated a customs airport in 2001, but there are no scheduled international flights. For Laos, most travellers fly here and cross Friendship Bridge 3 to Thakhek by the international bus.
Take a taxi or the shared airport van. Wikivoyage puts a taxi at about ฿200, and the shared van has been about ฿100 per person, though that figure dates from 2016. A car with driver booked through bookingMentor avoids waiting for either.
Ninety minutes before a domestic flight is plenty. Thai AirAsia closes bag drop 60 minutes before departure, and queues are short except around festivals.
No published 24-hour operation exists. The terminal is busy around the morning and evening departures, so it is not somewhere to wait overnight.
It is not a good option. Flights do not run overnight, so book a room in town instead; the riverside hotels are 20 to 30 minutes away.
We could not confirm any lounge here. With short check-in times and few flights, most passengers wait at the gate.
Car rental is available at the airport and in town. If you would rather not drive, book a car with driver on bookingMentor, which is useful for the day trip to That Phanom.
The temple is in That Phanom district, about 53 km south of Nakhon Phanom town, so allow at least an hour each way by road from the airport.
Yes. The Lai Ruea Fai festival at the end of Buddhist Lent fills flights and hotels, and in 2024 officials expected more than 1,000 passengers a day through the airport. Book early if you plan to visit then.
Yes. The car park has space for about 140 vehicles beside the terminal.
