Nancy's Kitchen is a Nyonya (Peranakan) restaurant at 13 Jalan KL 3/8, Taman Kota Laksamana, Melaka. Nancy opened it in October 1999 after years of cooking for her family, and it has become one of the best known places in Melaka for Straits Chinese home cooking. It suits travellers who want family recipes in a homely room, and who eat pork, since the restaurant is non-halal. Jonker Street and Dutch Square are a short drive or a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
Pongteh, assam fish and other Nyonya dishes
Bestsellers include pongteh pork braised with fermented bean paste, assam fish in a tangy tamarind gravy, pai tee cups and popiah rolls. Nancy's own favourite is ayam buah keluak, chicken cooked with the black nut that defines classic Peranakan cooking. Its flavour is deep and earthy, and not everyone takes to it. Dishes are made for sharing, and prices are moderate.
Family recipes and busy times
The recipes go back to Nancy's great-grandmother, and family members still work in the kitchen and dining room. The room is casual. It gets busy at lunch and at weekends, when visitors arrive from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and the restaurant has thousands of online reviews from locals and visitors.
