Teksen (also written Tek Sen) is a family-run Penang Chinese restaurant in two shophouses at 18 and 20 Lebuh Carnarvon, in the UNESCO-listed old town of George Town. It has served Penang since 1965 and holds a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Malaysia 2026. It suits groups who want shared plates of zi char, Cantonese cooking with a local twist, at moderate prices. Chulia Street and the clan houses are a few minutes away on foot.
Double-roasted pork and the house tofu
The double-roasted pork is the dish regulars order first, and it sells out. The Michelin Guide recommends the deep-fried house-made tofu with dried local anchovies, seasoned simply with soy sauce, and suggests asking about the double-boiled soup of the day. Dishes come family style, so a group can try several.
Red tablecloths and a plain dining room
Teksen is plain and practical, with Chinese couplets on the walls and red tablecloths. Local families and visitors fill it quickly at both services.
Tuesday closures and arriving at opening time
Teksen closes on Tuesdays. Dinner tables go fast, so arriving right at opening is the surest way to sit without a long wait. Belacan fried chicken is the other plate Table Journey names as a signature, and the assam tumis curry comes with a choice of black pomfret or stingray.
