In the US Virgin Islands, the year ends with warm water, beach parties and, on St. Croix, the biggest carnival of the Caribbean winter. The Crucian Christmas Festival runs its village, J'Ouvert and an all-white New Year's Eve celebration through the last week of December, with the parades on 1 and 2 January 2027. On St. Thomas and St. John the night belongs to resort parties, beach bars and boats anchored off the coast for the midnight fireworks.

This guide explains where to spend 31 December 2026 on each of the three main islands, what the festival schedule looks like, how to move between islands on a busy holiday week, and the entry and money details that catch out visitors from abroad. The USVI is a US territory, so it pairs naturally with a mainland trip; see our New Year's Eve in the USA guide for city options.

New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, and 1 January is a public holiday. It falls in the warm dry season, when trade winds keep the heat down. You land at Cyril E. King (STT) on St. Thomas or Henry E. Rohlsen (STX) on St. Croix, and US entry rules apply, so you need an ESTA or a US visa depending on your passport. Money is the US dollar. Driving is on the left, in mostly left-hand-drive cars.

How New Year's Eve is celebrated in the US Virgin Islands

Across the islands, 31 December is often called Old Year's Night, and the holiday mood starts long before. Christmas and New Year blend into one festive season of steel pan, quelbe (the territory's folk music) and family feasts, with ham, sweet bread and home-made guavaberry rum on many tables. The night itself is a mix of church watch-night services, house parties and big public parties on beaches and docks.

Each island has its own character. St. Croix, the largest, puts its energy into the Crucian Christmas Festival. St. Thomas, the busiest and most developed, has the resorts, marinas and nightlife. St. John, two-thirds national park, keeps things smaller and centred on the bars of Cruz Bay.

On St. Croix the festival runs straight through New Year's Eve. The territory's Department of Tourism lists the 2026-27 Crucian Christmas Festival as ending on 2 January 2027, with the Festival Village in Frederiksted serving local food and live music from Latin to reggae, and children's and adults' parades as the closing highlights. Visitors are welcome at all of it.

Best places to celebrate New Year 2027 in the USVI

Frederiksted on St. Croix is the place for the Crucian Christmas Festival, with its village and all-white New Year's Eve party, and Christiansted offers calmer waterfront dinners. St. Thomas has the biggest choice of resort parties and beach bars, with boats anchored for the midnight fireworks, and Cruz Bay on St. John suits a small-town countdown.

Frederiksted, St. Croix: Crucian Christmas Festival

The Crucian Christmas Festival is the reason to choose St. Croix for New Year. Pageants and calypso shows build up through December, then the festival village opens at the fairgrounds in Frederiksted on 26 December 2026 and runs nightly with food stalls, music stages and rides. The 2026–27 schedule from the island's tourism listings includes boat races on 27 December, a food fair on 30 December, and on 31 December both J'Ouvert, the early-morning street jump-up, and an Old Year's/New Year's Eve all-white celebration.

The two parades close the season: the Children's Parade on 1 January 2027 and the Adult Parade on 2 January 2027, both along King Street in Frederiksted, one block up from the waterfront. Thousands of masqueraders in feathers and sequins dance behind troupes and music trucks. Find a spot early, bring water and shade, and expect the town to fill from mid-morning.

Dates are published as tentative until close to the season, so check the Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and St. Croix tourism calendars before you lock in flights. Pack white for the 31 December celebration. Anyone who loves carnival music will want to be here.

Christiansted, St. Croix: waterfront dinners and a calmer night

Christiansted, on the north shore, is St. Croix's second town and the better base if you want a more relaxed night than the festival village. Its arcaded Danish-era streets and boardwalk hold restaurants and bars that run New Year's Eve dinners and parties, and the harbour fills with boats.

From here you drive across the island to Frederiksted for the parades; allow extra time on parade days. Book your New Year's dinner ahead; set menus at the better restaurants fill in early December. Couples after a quieter night often use the town as a base for three to five nights.

St. Thomas: resort parties, beach bars and boats at midnight

St. Thomas has the biggest selection of organised New Year's Eve parties. In recent years Sapphire Beach on the East End has hosted one of the island's largest beach parties, with live entertainment and fireworks running past midnight. Resorts on the East End and around Charlotte Amalie sell gala dinners and party packages, and the bars at Red Hook keep going late.

Many visitors spend the countdown on the water. Day-charter and sunset-cruise companies run New Year's Eve trips, and the anchorages fill with private yachts. If you book a boat, confirm the return time and how you will get back to your hotel, because taxis are scarce after midnight.

Charlotte Amalie itself, the capital, is a cruise port with duty-free shopping by day; for nightlife, the East End and Red Hook are livelier. Parties and dinners are ticketed and sell early, and the taxi queues after midnight are long, so pre-book your ride back.

Cruz Bay, St. John: barefoot bars and a small-town countdown

St. John suits travellers who want New Year without the crowds. Most of the island is Virgin Islands National Park, and the action on 31 December is in Cruz Bay, where open-air bars and restaurants spill into the streets and half the bar is on first-name terms by midnight. Spend the day on Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay, then walk between bars at night.

Ferries from Red Hook on St. Thomas run frequently by day and take about 15 to 20 minutes. Check the last sailing if you are staying on St. Thomas; on a holiday night it pays to stay the night on St. John and skip the race for a late boat. Accommodation is mostly villas and small inns, booked months ahead by couples and walkers who come for the park trails.

Five nights on St. Croix for the festival

  • 29 Dec, Arrive and settle in: Fly into STX, pick up a rental car and stay in Christiansted. Evening on the boardwalk.
  • 30 Dec, Beaches and the food fair: Morning on a north-shore beach, then the festival food fair in Frederiksted.
  • 31 Dec, J'Ouvert and Old Year's Night: Early J'Ouvert jump-up, a long afternoon rest, then white clothes for the evening celebration.
  • 1 Jan, Children's Parade: A slow morning, then the Children's Parade on King Street. Sunset on the west-coast beaches near Frederiksted.
  • 2 Jan, Adult Parade: Claim a shaded spot on King Street by mid-morning for the main parade.

Plan around the crowds. Holiday week is the busiest of the year. Book flights, rental cars and rooms by early autumn; rental cars on St. Croix and St. John run out.

Driving is on the left, usually in left-hand-drive cars, with narrow, steep roads. Do not drive after drinking; plan taxis in advance for the night of 31 December.

Parade crowds are dense and the sun is strong. Carry water and sunscreen, keep valuables to a minimum and agree a meeting point with your group.

Where to stay in the US Virgin Islands for New Year's Eve

Pick the island first, then stay within walking distance of the night you have chosen, because taxis are shared vans that are hard to find after midnight and roads on all three islands are dark and winding.

St. Croix. For the Crucian Christmas Festival, Frederiksted is the place to be: the festival village and parades are in town, so a guesthouse or small hotel there saves a late drive across the island. Christiansted, on the north-east coast, has more hotels and waterfront restaurants and suits travellers who want a dinner and a calmer countdown; it is on the opposite side of the island from Frederiksted, so plan transport if you want both.

St. Thomas. The East End around Red Hook and Sapphire Beach is the base for beach parties, bars and boat departures, and it is also where the ferries to St. John leave. Charlotte Amalie has more budget rooms but is quieter at night.

St. John. Stay in or close to Cruz Bay if you want the bars and countdown; villas around Coral Bay and inside the national park area are beautiful but a long, dark drive away. Do not count on a late ferry back to St. Thomas after midnight.

What New Year's Eve in the Virgin Islands costs

The festival events on St. Croix and the public celebrations in town are free to watch. Paid options are resort gala dinners, countdown parties and boat trips, and holiday prices for these are published only a few weeks ahead. As a guide, a regular-season dinner sail from the Ritz-Carlton on St. Thomas with open bar and snacks has been listed at around US$149 to US$169 per adult; New Year's Eve trips on the water are usually priced higher and sell out. The real expense is accommodation: the Christmas to New Year fortnight is the islands' busiest period, villas commonly set minimum stays, and rental cars on the smaller islands are limited, so book rooms, cars and inter-island transport together and early. Add 12.5 percent hotel room tax to quoted rates: it rose from 10 percent for stays from 1 January 2016 and applies to the room charge plus extras such as energy surcharges, though not to food, drinks or tips.

Getting to the US Virgin Islands for New Year

St. Thomas (STT) and St. Croix (STX) both have direct flights from several US mainland hubs, and most international travellers connect through a major US gateway. On arrival you go through US Customs and Border Protection, the same as entering the mainland, so you need an approved ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program or a US visa, depending on your passport. Check the US Department of State and CBP websites for your nationality well before booking. Compare fares on our flights page.

Between islands, ferries link St. Thomas and St. John, and seaplanes link the harbours of Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted, alongside short flights between STT and STX. Holiday-week seats sell out, so book the inter-island leg at the same time as your main flights. For St. John, both the passenger ferry and the car barge leave from Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas, a drive or taxi ride from the airport.

Tips for New Year's Eve in the Virgin Islands

Villas and hotels on all three islands fill for the holiday fortnight, so book your hotel by September for the best choice. The St. Croix festival's New Year's Eve party is an all-white event, and white is popular at beach parties too. Taxis are shared vans with set fares per person and are scarce after midnight, so agree your pickup in advance.

Daytime parades and beaches mean strong sun; bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water. A sunset or midnight boat trip shows you fireworks from every bay at once, but book it well ahead. New Year's Day is a public holiday and many shops close, though St. Croix's Children's Parade goes ahead.
