Galliera shows fashion in rotating exhibitions: check what is on.
Palais Galliera is the City of Paris fashion museum near the Trocadéro, in a palace by Léon Ginain, with rotating exhibitions and the Gabrielle Chanel galleries opened in 2020. A solo ticket costs €14 and a combined one €17, with under-18s free. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00, Thursdays until 21:00, closed Mondays, and it can shut between shows. Plan a 90-minute visit.
The Palais Galliera is the fashion museum of the City of Paris, officially the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, at 10 avenue Pierre-1er-de-Serbie in the 16th arrondissement near the Trocadéro. It suits anyone interested in dress, couture and design history, and it works well as a 90-minute stop between the Eiffel Tower area and the Champs-Élysées.
Marie Brignole-Sale, Duchess of Galliera, had the palace built to house the art collection she planned to leave to Paris. The architect Léon Ginain designed it in a Renaissance-inspired style, and work ran from 1879 to 1894. Her paintings went elsewhere in the end, so the building opened in 1895 for exhibitions of other kinds. The City of Paris has used it as its fashion museum since 1977.
The City of Paris puts the collection at nearly 200,000 works, one of the largest fashion holdings in the world, with clothing, accessories, photographs and graphic material from the 18th century to the present. Textiles fade and weaken in light, so nothing stays on permanent display. Each season the museum builds an exhibition around a designer, a period or a theme, and the rooms change completely between shows. Two visits a year apart can have almost nothing in common.
In 2020 the museum reopened after a renovation that turned the vaulted lower level into the Gabrielle Chanel galleries. This added a large amount of exhibition space and lets the museum show rotating displays from its own holdings next to the main exhibition. A combined ticket covers two exhibitions when both are running.
The palace is part of the visit. The façade and courtyard face a public garden that wraps around the building, a quiet place to sit before or after the galleries.
