Visits are 30-minute slots booked online, about €10, free for under-14s. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Architecture fans should book ahead.

Villa La Roche (Maison La Roche) is a house designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in 1923 to 1925, at 10 Square du Docteur Blanche in the Auteuil district of Paris's 16th arrondissement. Now home to the Fondation Le Corbusier and listed by UNESCO, it opens Tuesday to Saturday by compulsory online booking, with full tickets at about €10. It suits architecture lovers and anyone curious about modernist design.

Raoul La Roche's home and picture gallery

Le Corbusier and his cousin designed the house for Raoul La Roche, a Basel-born banker and collector of modern art. La Roche wanted a home that could also show his paintings, so the architects split the building in two: one part held the living rooms, the other an art gallery. It was built with the neighbouring Maison Jeanneret, designed for Le Corbusier's brother Albert, and the two form a single ensemble at the end of a quiet private lane.

Pilotis, ribbon windows and Purist colour

The house is an early statement of the ideas Le Corbusier later set out as his "five points", with pilotis, ribbon windows and a roof terrace, behind smooth white walls. The colour scheme follows his Purist approach. Walking through it, from the tall entrance hall to the curved gallery with its ramp and up to the library, shows his idea of a promenade architecturale, and this route is the heart of the visit.

La Roche gave the house to the Fondation Le Corbusier before his death in 1965, and the foundation has occupied the ensemble since 1968. The Maisons La Roche and Jeanneret were listed as historic monuments in 1996, and in 2016 UNESCO inscribed them among 17 sites in The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier.

The Fondation Le Corbusier archive

The foundation that owns the house holds the world's largest collection of Le Corbusier's drawings, studies and plans: about 8,000 drawings, studies and plans, around 450 paintings, 30 enamels, 200 works on paper and large written and photographic archives. The first restoration of the house began in the 1970s.
