Above the upper Golden Horn in Eyüp, Pierre Loti Hill is a viewpoint and café named after the French writer, reached by cable car or a walk up through an old cemetery. The viewpoint is free, while the cable car fare and café prices apply. One to two hours suits tea with a view.
Pierre Loti Hill is a hilltop viewpoint and tea garden above the Eyüp district on the western side of Istanbul, looking down the full length of the Golden Horn. It sits just above the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, one of the city's most important Islamic shrines, and suits anyone who wants a glass of tea with a long view, especially at sunset.
The hill is named after the French naval officer and novelist Julien Viaud, who wrote as Pierre Loti. He visited Istanbul many times from the 1870s, admired Ottoman life and spent time in Eyüp, and his novel Aziyadé is set partly in the city. A coffee house on the hilltop, said to have been one of his favourite places, became known as the Pierre Loti café, and the hill took its name from it.
The café terraces and tea gardens look along the upper Golden Horn, with Fatih and Beyoğlu on either shore and the domes and minarets of the old city in the distance. The slope below is covered by a large Ottoman cemetery, with carved gravestones shaded by cypress trees. Small shops and a hotel cluster near the upper cable car station.
