In short

Kerhillio is a long, dune-backed Atlantic beach in Erdeven, southern Brittany, where families swim and surfers and kitesurfers catch the swell, with the Kerzerho standing stones a short drive away. It is free and open at all times, and lifeguards cover it in season. Half a day suits the beach; add more for the stone alignments.

Plage de Kerhillio is the family beach of Erdeven, a commune on the Atlantic coast of the Morbihan in southern Brittany. It faces west across dunes toward the Quiberon peninsula and Belle-Île, has a summer lifeguard post and the Handiplage label, and suits families, surfers, kitesurfers and walkers who want space and a megalithic site close by.

Erdeven's dune coast toward Quiberon

Kerhillio is the easternmost of Erdeven's big beaches, which together run along several kilometres of dune coast. The sand continues south into the Sainte-Barbe beach in Plouharnel and on toward the neck of the Quiberon peninsula. On clear days you see Quiberon and Belle-Île, and sometimes Groix. The dunes behind form a protected landscape, and marked paths cross them to spare the plants that hold the sand.

Summer lifeguard hours and Handiplage equipment

The Morbihan tourism board lists a lifeguard post open daily from 12:30 to 19:00 between 2 July and 31 August. The beach received the Handiplage label in 2019 and has two Hippocampe beach wheelchairs, two Tiralo bathing chairs and an access mat for visitors with reduced mobility. Public toilets are on site. The sandy bottom is flat, so the walk into the water is easy, though Atlantic currents can be strong outside the supervised zone.

Zones for surf, kite and sand yachts

Kerhillio is one of the main water-sports beaches of the Baie de Quiberon. Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddle, sand yachting and power kites all have their own zones, and kitesurfing and sand yachting are allowed only at set hours. A 15,000 m² area is reserved for sand yachting. Local schools give surf lessons, and longe-côte, walking in waist-deep water, is popular here too.

Kerzerho's megalith rows 4 km inland

About 4 km inland stand the Kerzerho alignments, the largest megalithic site in Brittany after Carnac and a listed historic monument since 1862. The main group has about 195 stones in five rows over some 200 metres, and the wider Kerzerho-Varquez ensemble stretches for nearly 2 km. The tallest stones, the Géants de Kerzerho, are about 6 metres high and weigh around 40 tonnes. Carnac itself is about 10 km away.
