Seafront
Walk the Boulevard Garnier from the port along the arc of the bay.
Royan's main town beach, La Grande Conche, curves for about 2.6 km of fine sand beside the seafront boulevard and holds Blue Flag status. It is free at all hours, and in July and August 2026 lifeguards work from 11 AM to 7 PM at the Mirado post. Half a day suits a swim; a full day adds the church and port.
Plage de la Grande Conche is the largest beach in Royan, a resort in the Charente-Maritime at the mouth of the Gironde estuary on France's Atlantic coast. Its arc of fine sand runs about 2.6 km along the seafront from the town centre toward Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, and it suits families who want supervised swimming, children's clubs and restaurants a few steps from the sand.
Sources give the length as between 2,600 and 2,650 metres, which makes the Grande Conche the biggest of Royan's town beaches by a wide margin. Restaurants, cafés and shops line the boulevard behind it, the port is about 500 m from its western end, and the town centre is within walking distance. The beach holds the Blue Flag label, and its bathing water was rated in the top quality class in 2024.
The beach is long enough to need two lifeguard posts, Mirado and Lido, so check which is closer to where you settle. For 2026 the tourist office lists the Mirado post from 20 June to 6 September, with full days from 11:00 to 19:00 in July and August and afternoons only in the shoulder weeks. The Lido post works from 1 July to 31 August, 11:00 to 19:00. Swim between the flags.
In season the beach has a volleyball court, play areas, children's clubs and a nautical club, with bars, toilets and rental of sunbeds, parasols and beach tents. Children's clubs also run a learner pool. Rentals and clubs are the only things you pay for; access to the sand is free.
Most of central Royan was destroyed in the bombing raids of January 1945 and rebuilt after the war in a modernist style, which is why the seafront looks so different from other Atlantic resorts. The best-known building of that period is the concrete church of Notre-Dame, about 800 m from the beach. Guillaume Gillet designed it; work started in 1955, it was inaugurated on 10 July 1958, and it has been a listed historic monument since 1988.
