Plage des Dames is a calm, east-facing beach in the Bois de la Chaise area of Noirmoutier island, off the Vendée coast, known for its wooden jetty and row of white beach huts. Families and walkers like the sheltered water of the Baie de Bourgneuf. Access is free at all times, but the Passage du Gois road floods twice a day. Plan half a day.
Plage des Dames is a sheltered, east-facing beach in the Bois de la Chaise area of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, on the island of Noirmoutier off the Atlantic coast of the Vendée. It is known for its wooden jetty and line of white beach huts, and suits families, walkers and anyone who wants calm water on the Baie de Bourgneuf.
The estacade, a wooden jetty, runs out over the water from the end of the beach, and with the white beach huts it has appeared on postcards of the island since the early 1900s. The huts belong to private owners. Morning light on the jetty is the best time for photographs.
The beach faces east across the Baie de Bourgneuf, which shelters it from the prevailing westerly winds, so the water is usually calm. That makes it a good choice for families with young children.
Behind the sand lies the Bois de la Chaise, a protected forest of about 110 hectares of holm oaks and maritime pines, listed as a site in 1936. Its shaded paths suit walks, cycling and picnics, and mimosa flowers here in late winter.
The island's main town is about 2.5 km away. Its castle dates back to the 12th century; the keep, more than 20 metres high, dominates the island, and the castle has been a listed historic monument since 1994 and houses a museum. Salt marshes cover much of the island's interior.
