Competing airlines to Don Mueang, taxis into town and the few things to know before you land at SNO. Ask a question
In short

Sakon Nakhon's small airport is 15 to 20 minutes from town, served by Nok Air and Thai AirAsia from Bangkok Don Mueang. There is no airport bus: taxis charge about ฿100 to ฿150, agreed before you leave, and hotels in town book the return taxi. The terminal closes overnight.

By the bookingMentor Travel Desk · Updated · How we research

Sakon Nakhon is a one-room airport with two Bangkok routes and short hours. This guide is mostly about what to sort out before you arrive: cash, a ride and the timing of the last flight.

Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.

What to expect

Sakon Nakhon Airport (SNO) is a small domestic airport in That Na Weng subdistrict, about 12 km north of Sakon Nakhon town in north-eastern Thailand, off the Sakon Nakhon–Nakhon Phanom road. Nok Air and Thai AirAsia fly from here to Bangkok Don Mueang. It suits visitors to Nong Han lake and the town's Khmer-era temples, and travellers continuing east to Nakhon Phanom and the Mekong.

A shared military and civil field

The airport opened in 1972. The Royal Thai Army owns the land, the Royal Thai Air Force also uses the airfield, and the Department of Airports runs the small civil terminal. Military aircraft have flown from here throughout its history.

In 2018 the government earmarked Sakon Nakhon, together with Chumphon, Tak and Udon Thani, for expansion and transfer to Airports of Thailand, the state company that runs Bangkok's and other major airports, under a budget that also covered two new airports. No transfer had taken place by November 2026, and the Department of Airports still operates the terminal.

The 2,600 m runway and bird hazards

The single runway, 05/23, is 2,600 m long and 45 m wide. The airfield sits 161 m above sea level and has Category 6 fire cover. The aeronautical publication warns of birds near both runway ends.

Traffic has grown steadily. Sakon Nakhon handled 348,600 passengers in 2025 on 2,402 aircraft movements, and carried no air freight at all.

Nok Air and Thai AirAsia to Don Mueang

The schedule is simple. Nok Air and Thai AirAsia both fly to Bangkok Don Mueang, each usually more than once a day, in about an hour and a quarter. There are no other routes and no service to Suvarnabhumi, so international connections mean crossing Bangkok between airports. Customs and immigration are not provided.

No bank, post office or restaurant on site

The terminal is one compact building where check-in and baggage claim take minutes. The official aerodrome listing shows no bank, no post office and no restaurant on site and points travellers to hotels, restaurants and the hospital in town, so arrive with baht in cash and eat before you come. A limousine and car rental kiosk inside books cars and vans by phone or LINE, and taxis and pickup drivers wait outside for most flights.

The airport keeps some of the shortest hours of any Thai airport with daily flights: 06:00 to 18:00 local time. There are no late-evening departures, and the terminal is effectively closed outside flight times.

Nong Han lake and Khmer-era sights

The town sits on the south-west shore of Nong Han, the largest lake in north-eastern Thailand. In the Khmer period Sakon Nakhon was a major city of the Khotraboon region, and Khmer shrines and finds across the province reflect that past.

Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, in the centre, is the town's main temple. Its brick and mortar chedi stands about 24 m tall and is pictured on the reverse of Thailand's ten-satang coin. The site dates to roughly the 12th to 16th centuries, and the chedi is said to enshrine the footprints of four past Buddhas and the future Buddha, Phra Si Ariya Mettrai. A chapel beside it houses Luang Pho Ong Saen, a Buddha image revered across the province. During the Second World War the town sheltered members of the Free Thai movement.

The 18:00 closing time and last flights

Arrive about an hour before your flight. Because the airport closes at 18:00, the last flight of the day leaves in the late afternoon; anything later means waiting until the next morning. April is the hottest month here, and the rains run from May to October.

Landside and airside

At Sakon Nakhon, landside is the check-in and arrivals area at the front of the small terminal, where the limousine and car rental kiosk is. Airside is the departure waiting area after security. There is little to buy on either side.
